Latest news on livestock EID proposals - is the majority of the industry "in complete agreement"?

Various threads have popped up on TFF about cattle EID but tonight I learned more about what IS intended and with implementation from Christmas or January 1st.

  • New electronic tags will be required to be fitted and during a phased period
  • The new tag numbers will not be the same as the existing passport number rendering existing passports, records, pedigree certificates obsolete
  • All existing EID tags become redundant
  • Movements to be pre-reported via stick readers and smart phones
  • There is an August cut-off date for decisions
  • NFU staff and sector elected representatives are said to be supporting these measures despite not all implications such as common and fell grazing being adequately understood or addressed.
  • Even yesterday DEFRA officals on a fact finding mission had no idea of these wider ramifications

The only reference document I can come across is the December 2017 SW NFU Livestock Board briefing document and I'm sure many have already seen this and discussed it. I understand the situation has moved beyond what is stated in this document including the bullet points above.

As more come to light even from consultations this week, I will post up where I can.

Having a friend on Exmoor finally TB test clear after the worst Winter, I can't imagine how he will now have to cope with the implications for 700+ head of cattle and many pedigree breeds too

An elected NFU high up when faced by NFU members threatening to resign retorted that the majority of producers were behind these proposals. Are we?

Setting aside all the whole can of worms, that this next government wonder plan will surely turn out to be, why on earth does this seem to be a good idea.....

One number is just as good as another. If it has to be done, then FFS keep the same numbers so that all passports and other records don't have to be duplicated:banghead:

Exactly

And with the few that will be tempted can you imagine some of the pedigree switch backs that may occur during the "transition" period

Mindblowing , is it not? That every beast will be assigned a new identity. Has anyone ever heard of a crazier , half baked piece of garbage? I mean , the sheer massive , incalculable pointlessness takes this to a new level of insanity.

Anyone with a decent head knew this kind of crap would happen. All the blinkered and supposed innovators that trust our reps to regulate this stuff for us should hang their heads in shame. Idiots the lot of them

The NFU were highly visible on here when they were after votes for the recent elections. If this is true, howabout they come back and justify their support for such a ludicrous bureaucratic/costly nightmare? How can this possibly be in the interests of farmers i.e. their members? Oh, perhaps it is simply to guarantee the NFU officeholders cosy titles/jobs with ADHB and the like!

So are you saying that all CURRENT animals will be given NEW numbers? Starting in Jan 19?

Seriously? Do you have a source or any references?

That is what I am being led to believe is intended. Decision cut off date August this year, implementation Chrimbo or Jan 2019. I am waiting on further information over the coming 10 days following scheduled meetings. My source is happy to put out a correction if it some aspects do not come to pass but that is the intention, yes. The transition period also needs clarification

Joke if current animals have to be reassigned new numbers and hence double tags. Certainly won't be cheap doing it.
As I've said. This HAS been discussed. The final decision cut off point is August I'm led to believe. I started this thread as maybe it's not too late to get some common sense in to the job. I'm no luddite myself and actually prefer to do things like VAT returns online, BCMS / CTS etc.

It's got to be workable though

Meanwhile, back in the real world, hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants are roaming the length and breadth of this little island and the government has no idea of how many or where they are. It's a bloody joke.
I've said it before - chain a cow to every immigrant and they will always know their whereabouts.
