here's a question i should really know the answer to....but don't :bag:

if you sow seed past it's latest drilling date is it that it might not grow or will grow but not set an ear of grain:scratchhead:

It'll grow but potentially stay In a vegetative state and not produce a seed.
Assuming you put the seed in the ground the right way up in the first place!!!!!!

It’ll grow alright but if it has a vernalisation requirement then it won’t go from the vegetative stage (just tillering) to the reproductive state (putting up a stem and producing an ear with seeds).

Winter barley generally has a low vernalisation requirement compared to wheat.
The vernalisation requirement is usually met by a certain number of days of cooler temperatures but I think day length plays a part too.
The vernalisation clock starts ticking as soon as a seed germinates rather than when it emerges over ground.

It’s just nature’s way of preventing a plant producing seeds during the winter where the seeds would rot or get eaten.
