Lathes...

Already running a 25 kva single phase, when the electric does get here it's not much more for 3 phase so that's what I'll have. Was just looking for a answer in the meantime.
Yes 25k of diesel would go a fair way running a generator!

I have to say, I bought an old English lathe and use it quite often.. OK takes up a bit of space in the workshop, but certainly gets you out of a hole when something brakes on a Sunday.

My advice would be to buy a decent set of good quality indexable tools makes all the difference.

same here three phase sitting at a pole in the yard but from a few weeks ago, they up graded the line and brought it to here as if a development happens up the road it will have to start from here. would like to know the ball park figure and how to work out useage. id say if we asked now we would have to pay a fair bit as it is so soon to the upgrade but in a year or two it might be possible

Firstly do no buy new. You're at least a 0 off buying something new that's worth having.

Just some examples. £1k is plenty of budget for a decent old lathe.
Harrison would be as good a make as any at that price

well they replaced the line and we enquired about three phase, man said we are upgrading anyway so will bring it this length. then were told to not ask to quick. they would need permission to pass it over our place in future if development starts so, u never know but nice to find out first as it might not be too bad and the building thing isnt moving much. enough on at the minute.

aha, ya didnt say for that reason, sit tight for sure.
play your cards right and you could have free 3ph at some point...

I love using a lathe there is something very therapeutic about it I find
when everything is going to plan, without doubt.

But, if you drop the ball she can be a real heart breaker....

Or without a lathe, using a pillar drill, emery cloth and a big bucket of time. After a while you will need therapy.

If you try this, just don't get caught borrowing the better half's nail files when you run out of emery.

And, if you really want to make your mark, let her catch you boiling up some gear oil soaked brake shoes in her largest saucepan, on the stove she just cleaned!

I still remember the larrupping I got from my mother when I'd used the oven to bake a wasps nest to get the grubs for bait.
Unfortunately I forgot about them & she came home & found the kitchen full of smoke! 1959 it was, & my @rse still remembers it!
My wifes's domestic appliances have been subsequently safe from me ever since (apart from the occasional shaft in the freezer prior to shrink fitting )
