Lawnmower

I’m after a mower that will cut rough grass around the farm. Something that will cope with 4” grass or 2 weeks growth. Have a cheap ride on at the mo and it’s not man enough for job. Looking 2 nd hand. Are these zero turn ones any good??

This petrol lawnmower ran out of petrol.

Now that the tank has been filled again with fresh petrol, it won’t start properly.

Petrol appears to be flowing fine to the carburettor.
I’ve opened the little bowl under the carburettor to make sure it was clean, a little residue in there but not much.

I cleaned the spark plug.

If left for a minute, it will fire but not run. It won’t fire again until it’s left sit for a minute.

Any suggestions as to what could be wrong?

Probably a blocked jet or float in the carb or something silly like that. Or a fuel starvation problem pre-carb.

Give it a puff of ether to get it running and then see if it keeps going on its own, might clear it up.

Have you cleaned the filter in the tank. Where the pipe is connected to tank. Most mowers have them now. If run out of fuel perhaps tank rubbish has restricted flow. Do you normally use E5 or E10 fuel ?
How old is the mower ?. Seen a lot of mowers with carbs destroyed using E10. If filter clean try using a tank of Aspen 4 fuel to clean fuel system out.

The fact that fuel seemed to be running freely to the carb made me assume the tank filter was ok.
Mower is from the mid 90’s. Not sure what grade petrol it is but it’s been running perfectly on it up until now.

Check what grade of fuel you've been using. If E10 a mower of that age can't cope with it , seen carbs eaten away and destroyed, even new mowers can't use E10 for long.
How old is the fuel. Even E5 only lasts about 3 weeks max, engines won't start after. Had mowers in from customers that won't start. Draining fuel and fresh fuel in and they start second pull.

I’ve seen the fresh fuel making a difference here too. It can last only a few weeks as you rightly say. I used fuel fresh from the pump yesterday but no joy. I suspect dirt somewhere….

I use both E5 fuel (not every garage stocks this), and I also add Briggs & Stratton Fuel Fit to my lawnmower (and chainsaw fuel). Not sure it works, but the local mechanic said he has had no end of small engines in after being run on E10.

we bought an ex local authority JD with mulch head a few years ago - been really good and different league to any domestic grade machines

was about 2-3k used iirc, it’s great on rough stuff / driveways etc - can even cut a footpath through a OSR crop in May if required!

+1 for this .
Carefully remove filter bowl and poke a bit of fuse wire straight up the vertical tube bit..........
