Laying a patio

Finally after almost 30 years of promising to lay a patio outside of the patio doors
Decided it was maybe time to get round to doing it.
Anyway
whats the best way of laying the slabs.
Seems there are 3 ways of doing it, on a bed of dry mortar, on a bed of sharp sand or basically dot and dab.
Am favouring the dry mortar mix, but am open to suggestions

The ones I've seen done recently are all whackerplated sand/stone underneath, with a wet sand/cement mix laid directly under the slabs to create a "solid" base.

I dug mine out last October with the digger, haven't been back since. At least we had had a swimming pool/ice rink all winter!!

I’m under pressure to lay fair bit of patio myself this summer so interested in methods ideas etc .

Mine was at the back of a barn conversion.
As it had to be built up it was crushed hard core whacked down. Dry mix then a full wet cement bed.

If it is to a reasonable ground I would put in type 1 whacked down about 75mm thick. Full wet cement bed to at least 50mm rubber mallet to hit the slabs into a level position.

Don't go for brushed pointing unless you like weeding, make it mortar joints

Don’t dot n dab, I did that 20 yrs ago, rats love it under there
