I’m under pressure to lay fair bit of patio myself this summer so interested in methods ideas etc .
What material you putting down .
if you use Indian sandstone ,you need to mix SBR in with the mortar ,use a full bed and brush the back of the slabs with a mix of sbr and cement ,,it makes a contact adhesive and makes them easier to level up .
Dont use a mortar grout ,it just comes out with frost and pressure washers .
Dont use bucket grouts ,they are fecking usless ,,go for Nexus V75 ,,(Utube video ) ,its easy to mix and quick to use and sets as hard as concrete .

What ever you go for ,dont skimp on the base materials ,,you'll only get one chance to get it right ,,years down the line if they are cockling ,the grouting has blown and the boss has triped over a couple of times on the ones that didnt bed properly you be wishing you went belt and braces .

Mine was at the back of a barn conversion.
As it had to be built up it was crushed hard core whacked down. Dry mix then a full wet cement bed.

If it is to a reasonable ground I would put in type 1 whacked down about 75mm thick. Full wet cement bed to at least 50mm rubber mallet to hit the slabs into a level position.

You can just see the mix bed.

Tell me about it - needing to order 140 square metres :(
Who do you use for indian sand stone (tumbled)
Also next dilemma we have four size limestone throughout the house - so I want four size sand stone for patio & paths around house. But someone calling herself my wife wants 900 x 600 because the guy laying it suggested it. What do people think ?

4 size is easy to lay ,,go online plenty of laying patterns ,600x900 look like a giant brick wall. No character.

Thanks, I'll get on with it. What I'd looked at seemed expensive, thought I was just looking in the wrong place but maybe not!

Go directly to the Indian importer. Indistone at Bluehouse farm Deeping St Nicholas. My brother does a fair bit of transport for them, and says that they are good to deal with.
