Laying Water pipe

Thanx Steevo, Devon def too far mate .

Trouble I’ve found is electro fusion is smart, but if you do get a leak you need the kit to fix it, I’ve had plasson fittings in the ground 12 years running at 11 bar pressure and none of it leaks, plus if it does fail I can dig it up and fix it.

MJ Abbott are cheapest for plasson fittings

I get my pipe from a guy called peter Stirzaker

Thanks for the info mate, hadn't really thought about "fixing|" a leak and needing the equipment , at least with easy fittings I can fix it as you say so maybe that is the way forward.

MJ Abbot have an online shop, really great prices and everything you need with pictures so you can pick exactly what you need

Electro fusion is definitely nice but just not practical for day to day use

I know it depends on soil /conditions but how long would it take to trench a 1000m, again variable dpending on the trencher being used but I've had 2 quotes so far 1 at £10k inc pipe , 1 at approx £5 per metre just trench, no backfill no pipe, based on this it'll be me a digger more time but no where near these sort of costs, am I being naive or are both of these quotes taking the pi$$

Sounds expensive to me. You could buy a trencher, use it, and flog it as ex-demo without losing more than £2-3k if you were so minded. Would save on backfill and be quicker and easier than a digger.

That said, whilst it sounds expensive to me, it's probably about right for the "non-farming" world. Consider also these firms have to survey before trenching, plus there's always an element of the unknown. Trenching in topsoil/clay is easy compared to sand or stone. Repairs to trenchers aren't cheap either...I know I'd be less keen to take my trencher anywhere that might damage it...and I certainly wouldn't fancy hiring it out.

Large scale field trenchers can easily cost 2k per day to run plus diesel, wear and labour.
If you want pipe unrolled, jointed, laid in trench and then back filled it all adds to the cost. A trencher like that is more than capable of putting in 3000 metres of land drainage so there is also some aspect of time not carrying out core work.

Doing it yourself with a digger will be cheaper but your time costs less than external contractor work. Will say that trencher backfill is a lot nicer than a 360 bucket lump spoil removed.

Have you tried Pipestock? https://www.pipestock.com/plasson
Find them cheapest for plasson and the bloody things are made 5 miles down the road from me!! but its cheaper to buy them from the mainland than any local stockists.

Does MJ abbot give a discount on there electrofusion web price? as it is 20-30% dearer than pipestocks web price.

Sorry I didn’t check there electro fusion range, I only use plasson fittings, although pipestock are £5 cheaper on delivery and they also stock upvc fittings and hydraulic adapters which I use on my troughs so thanks for pointing me in there direction

the idea of handling a roll of 1000 metres of pipe unless mounted on a drum would give me nightmares! Never understood why anyone should have issue with Plasson type fittings for, 4 or 5 it must be far cheaper than hiring the welder. Cannot ever remember one failing which is different to electro welding in my experience. But then they were cowboys working for Anglian water :)

Kinda sorted , had a quote for Ditchwitch c24 1 week £520, 7 rolls of 150m plus all fittings should come out at reasonable cost all in.
I take it plasson are the best to use?, compression or pushfit?

Definitely plasson and use the compression fittings, there’s a bigger range of fittings

A trencher will make the neatestjob, but have you thought about land drains, or anything else it may come across?
At least with a backactor you are farmore likely to see such things and be able to repair them
