Learning Arable & Livestock Farming

Apologies if this is in the wrong section. I have a feeling this is going to be a fairly long post so I'll summarise in this first paragraph then go into more detail further down if anyone wants to keep reading. I'm a 32 year old who wants to get into arable and livestock farming and I'm looking to see if it's viable to spend 2 days a week working on a farm for free in exchange for knowledge.

What I'm looking for and a bit about me:

To add to the above paragraph; my working career started as the owner of a campsite for about 8 years, which closed down around COVID time. For years farming was always something I've wanted to get into but a lack of funds, time and experience never allowed me to start. I have recently reduced my work from 2 jobs to now working 1 job part time (2 days a week). This free time has allowed me to hopefully pursue my potential farming career. I am looking for a farmer with experience in arable farming and livestock who wants free labour on their farm for 2 or 3 days a week in exchange for teaching me about becoming a successful farmer. I'm not expecting someone to hold my hand through everything but instead to give me guidance and enough knowledge about a certain job that they want doing so that I can then carry out that task successfully.

From the age of 16 I have lived on land (none of it my own unfortunately), whether that be in caravans, log cabins, even cars so I am not afraid of mud, hard times, hard living, or hard work. I have dabbled in a fair few things in the past such as working on cars (learning from my dad who is a retired mechanic), operating some machinery such as mini diggers and dumpers, and I have been around livestock (though very limited). I also have a class 2 HGV license which means I can drive rigid vehicles up to 32t, I also have a valid CPC. Furthermore, I have worked with wood quite a lot in the past, things like building wooden cabins, fencing etc. I pick things up quickly and can turn my hand to most things. I'm also not afraid to get stuck into anything and can work well alone or as a team.

I am based in Hailsham, East Sussex so ideally I'm looking for someone close to the area but I am happy to travel 2 or 3 hours away and do 2 or 3 consecutive days a week as I have a small camper which I could travel up in and stay in while I'm there. I don't want anyone to think I know more about farming than I actually do, I know very little, but I do have common sense which will hopefully help :).

Sorry for the long post and if anyone can help, or knows of someone who could help, then please let me know. Thanks

Given your HGV experience livestock haulage might be something of interest. Harvest work too. I would be wary of selling yourself too short. No need to offer free labour for very long.

Might be worth asking at Hailsham market to see if they have anything or know of anyone needing a hand.
