Songhai Center Located in Porto-Novo in the Republic of Benin provides an alternative model of agricultural development for a new African Society. At Songhai Center, they have transformed a land which previously did not produce in a multilayer and integrated production system. The integrated system is based in this principal: Zero Emission Research Initiative (ZERI). This means that nothing is wasted. Waste from one part of the operation is used to enhance another part of production. For example, crop waste is used to feed animals and animal waste is used in the fish production. Most importantly, in this integrated system, the environment is respected because no chemicals are used.
