Really best to get someone who can do it to show you, but no reason not to teach yourself. Make sure you get your vet to do some or send them away to check you are getting reliable results.

You need to be very accurate and ensure the sample is well mixed. If the results don't make sense (especially when you are learning) then run it again.

Agree that running through it in practice is the best way to learn most things though. It's not difficult, but seems like it when you read about the technique initially.
