Led lights😠

I’ve always got on well with leds, the old sodium and halogen yard flood lights and shed lights are being replaced with led as the old ones fail, which in the case of the sodium’s is quite regularly 🙄 had 1 50w floodlight fail in the last 3 years or so since I started using them, using mid range ones from local electrical wholesaler. I like the instant start up, no waiting for them to cool before you can turn on again, when you leave the workshop then remember you left something behind and go back etc. Only minor bugbear is the pre wired cables they come with, I prefer wiring straight into the light housing so it saves a junction box/joint

I've had about 15, 100watt lights up for maybe 5 years and not lost any until 2 weeks ago. Since reading this thread I have had to replace 3. @TripleSix how do you diognose what has gone wrong with them?View attachment 922398
It looks to me that on the top row, right hand side, third and forth leds both have black dots in them. The other two both seem to have a close pair of leds with black dots in them.

If it's got power coming out of the power supply it's the led board/chip that's faulty.
If there's no power the power supply unit is faulty

compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs
do seem to last and a few years ago they were 10 pence each.
I know I have a cupboard full. :)

Cheap LED fixtures that you need to go up a ladder to change are a nuisance :(

In the middle.
Thanks everyone for replying. I'll have a play with the tester and see what I can find. All three that have died have just gone straight out with no flashing. Work fine one day but will not come back on the next, never gone when on.

Replaced all our sheds over the past two years with led’s from Luxum LED. No fails yet.

Expensive but you know they are quality when you look at them in the flesh.

Just got a 100w via farmmarket place and it’s very good. Lot brighter than another 100w I have so Will see how they go

For shed bays, are you better with tubes, or floods like these?

Only issue I have with the 100w is the huge physical size of it compared to the 50w which makes it difficult to find somewhere suitable for it.

What I prefer and started doing is use two 50w side by side. Better spread of light and if one ever fails, you still got a light which is even simpler to take down.

The UFO luxum lights are very impressive. Saw a new build shed kitted out with them two weeks ago and it was like daylight inside.

Very expensive lights though.

The black dots are chips burnt out. They are grouped in 3s or 4s in series which is why the lamp stopped. You can buy the chips on rolls and replace them they are only soldered on.

Most multimeters have a diode setting and you can use this to test which ones are in the group. Just touch the probes on each side of the chip and it should light up if it’s working. One side is positive.

My cheap bodge is to to remove the chip with a soldering iron and then lay some solder across where the chip was to complete the circuit.
Bought 5 150w ufo type lights for about £40 each off eBay and when the first 2 failed I just sent a photo and they replaced them without having to return which shows you what the y really are worth. Bodged them and their still working. However 2 more have gone since so you really do get what you pay for all be it I’ve got 7 for £200.

Yeah it is big but this one is on the end of a building so its not too bad, i plan to put 4 of the 30 or 50w into 4 bays on the machinery shed

I read this thread last week as I'm needing some lights for my grain shed. Then I walked into a neighbours shed on Wednesday. He hung 8 agron led strip lights in every other bay. It was so bright he didn't have any rooflights. They were around 4ft, 90w around £150 each. I was blown away. Phoned the company and the chap said they're made in Finland to order with Korean chips, 5yr warranty. Reckon I'll need 4 per shed just waiting on a price for a job lot. They weigh a ton too. Honestly never seen owt like it.
