Hi, I'm changing from suckler, beef farming to dairy. Going with indoor zero grazing system as half the land I'll be grazing off is rented on a long term lease and 1 mile from yard. Starting with 70 or maybe 140 cows and work to 200 over a few years. Very little work needed to convert sheds and yard layout. Question is which robot do people prefer? Thanks

Probably an obvious one, but do you have a milk contract in place that will take all your milk ? They aren't exactly been handed out like confetti at the moment.

Really?! The best time to get into something is when it’s at its lowest as the only way out is up! If I was him I’d be borrowing more money and sticking the 200 cows on from the get go

If I was doing that I’d be sticking a parlour in and giving myself a chance if we happen to run through next winter on a low milk price. Ultimately it comes down to your attitude to risk and borrowed money, personally I’d rather not borrow a penny more than I have to.

Its looking like spring 2022 or at the earliest mid 2021 again I'd be actually milking, it's at the early stages but I've gone through a fair bit of detail as it is. But need to get planning permission in place. Delaval say extend the shed this way and Lely say do it that way! Both have good back up service to be fair where I'm situated.

Time is on your side to see what happens, normally it wouldn’t be an issue but who knows what the rest of 2020 has in store for us! Have you looked at westfalia? I’m sure they have a decent robot now. I literally know nothing about robots though. Looked at it in 2010 and decided it wasn’t for me.

Both have a great back up service where I'm situated. There's a good few of both around and service isn't an issue with any farmers

Both are as good as each other at milking cows from what I've seen. If both dealers have good backup then it comes down to personal choice and maybe price. We went with Lely, but 8 years ago they were the only show in town where servicing was concerned, the others have caught up a bit since then.

Plenty of used robots around @Magners mines some good contacts for used robots and also contacts in Ireland for help planning your setup.

Because you are starting up for a standing start, not milking before, you will find it easier.
Read every thread on robots on here.

70 cows AYR calving is fine, block, go for a parlour IMHO
