Letter Re Methane, Western Daily Press

It's better than The Warminster Journal. The chap in the garage/shop calls it the 2 minutes silence, because that's how long it takes to read it. I've always worked on the need to know basis. I'll be 78 in a couple of days time and there is an awful lot that I don't need to know about.

Now, back to the point of my original post?

What about where the methane originated from I.e. the food which these methane spewing animal ate.
Oh yes they where grown using Co2 from the atmosphere, which would could have broken down from methane emitted after 10-15 yrs. Of course there are other aspects the the ghg emmitions e.g. fertiliser and fuel.

If ever there was an example of "those who can, do. Those who can't, teach", then I suggest it would be Professor Bruce Webb.

Compare his methane source figures with the 'weighted' GHG figures produced by the EU, and work out where the 'bull sh!t' is coming from (the 'enteric' methane figure accounts for around half /4.7% of the total agricultural 10% figure) :

Some folk are good at putting points across clearly and concisely, many others not so eloquent.
Facts put over in a poor way don’t tend to win arguments like a well worded and structured reply, it’s a skill some have and some don’t

2 minutes would be in depth for The Journal 😂. Bg

You’d have thought with his qualifications he’d have a bit of interest in the role of carbon released from its store.
Yes - He should know that CO2 was nearly 20 times higher than today, in the Cambrian period and that led to the greatest expansion of plant and animal life in the history of the Earth.

This letter was published in the Western daily Press on Saturday February 12th. Can this be rebuffed by someone more knowledgeable than me or is he right, I would hope not.View attachment 1016761
The argument is simple, one exists to feed people, the other is going to be non essential. And should be stoped as quickly as possible.

one has existed in one form or another before man even came along the other only started when we used in for power and transport.
We had millions of horses for transport and those were carbon neutral, but that was not true when we replaced them with milllions of cars.

one is part of the natural environment the other is not.
Digging coal, gas and oil unlocks long locked away C02 and methane, the other is just a normal part of our natural environment, animals are not the problem and never were, the fossil fuel industry and the vegan brigade just like to use these statistics, the planet is more than caperble of coping with cows if we stop emitting from oil gas and coal.
And stop cutting down rain Forrest’s and plant some woodland.
this is fud made and advertised by the fossil fuel industry to take the narrative away from what they are still doing.

C02 only increases very slowly that because the planet is actively absorbing carbon all the time.
We don’t have to hit negative or neutral just stop using fossil fuels, and plant trees.
There are massive swaths of the planet that can grow trees and not touch productive land. We should be doing that as fast as we can. Trees take 5-10 years to get going.
in the end we just need to stop burning stuff especially fossil fuels.

Good find that, any idea what date? The blog they’ve linked looks about 4 years old so the article itself probably pre-dates GWP*. More recent articles elsewhere are really shining a light on fossil leakage and straight emissions, putting the whole methane story into perspective for those that can see the whole picture.

Well quite. And we could debate the tree planting charade as smoke and mirrors. Prob a good idea to stop destroying ancient forests as a start though.

The prof is being selective in which bit he forgets to acknowledge.

He simply is putting his head in the sand by classifying ruminant methane in the same way as that which spews from deep underground from an abandoned oil well.

The cow ate grass which sequestered that carbon from the air, that same carbon adds to the methane which is a closed carbon cycle.

That cycle lasts around 10-12 years (which even scientists don’t seem to be able to accurately quantify),so does not add to warming as it only replaces what is destroyed.

Old prof misses the point that cattle numbers have dropped in the UK so actually the industry is mitigating emissions from dirty industries like aviation.
