Leyland 255

Good evening, I've just purchased a 1974 Leyland 255 tractor. It is just coming out of the barn.
This model is very unusual on that side of the Channel. I am not sure they were imported.
I fitted it with a new battery and it started very easily. It was the first start since many years.
Everything works: engine, power steering, hydraulic linkage, pto and front loader. The clutch was stuck but it came better after "shaking" with electric starter while pressing clutch pedal.
I'll drive it home next week. It's a 20 mile drive.
I'm trying to find infos about the driver's manual and many others about that tractor. Nothing is available here in Brittany, western part of France.
Do you know about its reliability ? Where could i find pdf ?
Many thanks for your attention

Google search
Or Charley tractors might be able to help
Also eBay often sell manuals in cd form,

The tractors were reliable but prone to issues
Like brakes sticking and numerous oil leaks
Then engine is near bombproof unless neglected.
The clutch was a weakpoint with loader work as was the selectors for meshing 2 gears due to wear

But all in all a good simple tractor that will return many years service for little cost

The brakes were always a weak point, and I would definitely try them out a few times before you go on the road.
Firstly do they work?
Second are they just full on or off?
Third do they lock on after hard braking?
This was my experience of these.
Lastly if it has an early safety cab you will find it has finger traps everywhere, beware!

Exactly like a 1966 nuffield, not much progress there then.

Thank's for these replies and the pdfs. I'll be on the "wrong" side all the way if everything's fine...The brakes are full off or on?..yes Do they lock after breaking ?.. No
The cab is a "Bril" brand. maybe different in France with specific regulation; I'll not forget my soundless equipment.
I tried to join thenuffielandleylandtractorclub but it doesn't work. I contacted the webmaster as well, no reply at all.

With no joke, is the steering so dangerous ?
What means "Hyd" on the pto select lever ?
How could I join a photo of that beauty ?

Is there much free play in the steering wheel with the engine stopped? When that ps system gets worn, you just won't drive it in a straight line. Far too many moving parts, all repairable of course.
You need to select 'HYD' on the pto lever to engage the hyd pump.

The one main danger of tractors like these with dry disc braking was the discs wore quickly and were likely to seize. Although it is normal practice to lock the twin brakes before going on the road I rarely did because very often one braked far more efficiently than the other side. With brakes locked together and emergency braking the tractor was bound to make a very sharp U turn or at least leap across the road violently.

Hi jackerjean, and concratulations of good choice :)

What people wrote about brakes and steering is not so horrible in real life.Because we are speaking about Leyland, everybody must tell their own horror story about it...
Brakes are not a best ones, but if all linkage is free and correctly adjusted you can live with it.Its dry disc system,so it needs regular servicing and cleaning but if you do it properly you can forget it for years.
About steering, its not better or worse than any other power steering system from seventies. There are pins and bushes which can wear, but for tractor owner who know how to use grease gun its not a problem.
These tractors are more than 40-years old now,so most important thing is how they are looked after during their working life by previous owners.
