Hi.

Where abouts do you fill back end oil on one of these? And check the level?

Thanks everyone. Will have a look tomorow and try get it going. It's been stood for a few years. Yeh was going to stick some universal oil in it, had a drum for years and been looking for a tractor to put it in !

Thats the filler there, looks like its had a return piped to it at some point. Older models had dipticks between your legs but these had a bung as said above

A 272 non synchro? wasnt aware there was such a thing???
All 'R' and virtually all 'S' reg Q-cab Leyland 272(s) were fitted with the 5 x 2 (10F x 2R) transmission. Synchro tractors were only made available from the 1978 Royal Show onwards. By Smithfield 1980 the 'Harvest Gold' tractors were launched, so 'blue' Synchro models weren't actually available for much longer than their 5x2 predecessors.

Hang onto your 472 and 482 ...... Definite appreciating assets! Not quite in 7810 territory yet but, given the last 12-18 months, who knows what the future holds. Assuming they can afford to buy nitrogen next spring

Probably wont be a farmer that buys them not really that great a tractor to use, more a collectors thing. 🤷‍♂️ wont be going any where for a while yet

I have a 1976 272 synchro. Chassis number and log book matches .No sign that the synchro gearbox has been added later.

At that age I'd suggest it can only be a Leyland pre-production prototype (4P) tractor. According to a reliable source there were only around 12 completed / final build spec. Synchro tractors available in Feb 1978 when they were launched to Leyland dealers, though there were bound to be a good few Field Test predecessors built for test & evaluation purposes. Perhaps yours is one? Apparently the

Does it have the red 'synchro' stripes around the bonnet? What are the casting codes on the transmission casing? Do they relate to the approx registration age of the tractor?

It does have the red synchro stripes - first registered 1st March 1976 - first owner from 76 to 81. 2nd owner had it 40 years and now i have it. Its on 16.9 x 30 tyres with strange rims - not sure they are original though. Will check the casting codes.

Without doubt that's a very unique tractor. However, I'm afraid I'd be wondering whether it was unique when it left Bathgate or whether it 'became unique' sometime after that. A couple of questions:-

- Is the Serial No. prefix 272QM or 272QMS ?
- Are the rear cab mounts the cylindrical type with a horizontal securing bolt or the 'doughnut' type with a vertical securing bolt?
- If it was 1st registered in March '76, I'm assuming it's on a 'P' plate?

Here's why I'm a bit sceptical. Bathgate didn't launch their Q-cab (10 speed QM-cabbed) tractors to the UK press until May 1976. Tractor Q cab legislation didn't actually come into force until 1st June 1976 ..... it had been delayed for 12 months because many tractor manufacturers hadn't got their (new) model ranges ready in time. Now Leyland definitely built some QM cabs before May '76. Some were sent to the NIAE at Silsoe in 1974 & 75 for statutory ROPS and noise testing. But these weren't Synchro models ..... they were all 5 x 2 tractors.

It's always possible that you've got a unique pre-build machine, but road-registered with a commercial(?) user 2 years before the Synchro tractors were launched to UK dealers?? I regrettably think that's unlikely. I'd be interested to hear JVP's opinion
