Leyland & Nuffield tractor forum

Was looking for this website earlier but couldn’t find it. I’m looking for the old school forum that had the knowledgable Rick guy on it? Rick corbly I think?

Hi There

The old Nuffield and Leyland Forum was taken down, due to the hosting company packing up. The new forum has most of the faces on it, Rick Cobley is one of the moderators. All of the archive material is available on the new forum, so all of the posts are there from the old forum. You just need to register to access them.

Always happy to help with any Nuffield/Leyland stuff

I am glad you are here... a while ago an elderly farmer told me that he had problems with his Nuffield universal 3 … I don't know the full details but the cooling system was
pressurising and the radiator was damaged and replaced but it is not running properly, someone did tell me that the engine blocks crack and there is nothing that can be done

Very common with BMC Diesels I'm afraid. You can occasionally weld them up if the crack is in the right place, but as I'm sure you know, welding a cast block can be very tricky. I have heard of people having success with chemical metal, but if possible I would always lend to getting a new block. There are quite a few six cylinder conversions around for that very reason.

That being said however, I would not immediately turn to the block being cracked. The liners crack or turn porous too. They are pretty simple to change and not that expensive.

A pressure test and/or strip down should soon locate the issue.

thanks for reply.. what 6 cylinder engine fits into the Universal 3... would the steering be ok or heavy?.... I will tell you what I was thinking and that is fit a Perkins engine … would it be possible to do something similar as what was done in the 50's converting TVO Nuffields to diesel?

Quite a lot of different engines go into a Nuffield quite happily. The obvious choices are the Leyland 5.1 or 6/98.
The steering is usually fine. I would suggest popping along to nuffieldtractor.com and looking in the projects section. Additionally, there is loads of information in the archives about different conversions. If not, there is plenty of expertise and experience around to advise :)

thanks for reply ….. I will investigate

First of all, it will be almost impossible to fit a 6 into a three! Liners are the main culprit for coolant pressurisation.
Cracks in the top deck of the block can be ignored, cracks in the bottom require a replacement block, of which there seem to be none left.
A four pot BMC diesel will fit, but you will need the front frame from a four cyl tractor, and the bonnet. A sump with a slope on the front is needed to clear the steering, I used one from a JCB. Front axle saddle will fit under the frame, but I had to make up and weld in mounting studs for the front holes.

yesterday I found a Leyland 344 which was used for scraping until a back casting broke and could go for scrap if I am not quick... you say that the engine will fit with some modifications

Indeed it will. The bits you will need are, a four cyl nuffield front frame and bonnet. Leyland frame will bolt up to the Nuff rear end, but I am not sure about the steering linking up, def wont if hydrostatic. The best way out would be to swop the hyd units,(this is the casting I believe to have broken, they are prone to this due to a retaining pin breaking inside) particulary if the Nuff has the 2600 setup, if it has, it will have the same top arms as the leyland.
I know your short for time, but I would get the head off the Nuff, and check for cracked liners, if its the 100mm bore your almost certain to find at least one! When the liners are out, check for cracks between them in the bottom of the block, going down into the main bearing housings, if you have any, then its time to collect the 344!
