But the EU isn't an autonomous self perpetuating body, it's made up of real elected representatives from every member country, who enable us decide whatever we want it to be. The UK was highly instrumental in getting the EU to where it is now and suddenly we turn round and say it's not what we really want, it's all Germany and France's fault, because they bullied us. :banghead:

There's another vid when farage was quizzing JCJ about his election , he was the only candidate..... and it was a secret ballot ..

Well if nothing else he has flushed out the Labour Party, so their internal divisions will show up. Tom Watson today raising the issue buried since the Labour Party conference last September, that of a resolution at conference to request an second referendum. Fascinating to watch the Labour Party now to split along lines of educated metropolitans (Blairites) and working class (Corbynites). Should be good fun to watch the old Trotskyites in action.

Nothing sudden about it, didn't Maggie spend most of her time kicking up a fuss over the EU for various reasons?

Anyway, it is indeed a self perpetuating body, when has there been any serious discussion on reform other than gathering more power to Brussels?

The elected representatives are just a rubber stamp, they have no power as such , they can only give the the nod to legislation that was formulated in secret rather than initiate any of their own, when did the EU parliament do anything other than simply sign away whatever is put in front of them?

Margaret Thatcher was one of the main proponents of a European single market and pushed hard to see it achieved.

In certain areas European parliament can propose legislation to the Commission as well as approve or reject it. But the Commission members themselves are proposed and voted in by the respective leaders of the 28. However, it must be an area of improvement that the EU parliament should be able to propose all areas of legislation, but IMO it would be unfair on the smaller countries to allow the Commission members to be voted in by the populous.

The biggest handicap I see in giving the EU Parliament more power is the lack of interest from the voting population. This has allowed large groups of right and left wing radicals and nutters to be voted in, who have little intent on improving the lot of the average European.

That's because the UK is only interested in the single market .

I would happily stay in the EU paying £13 bill plus ... IF we could do bilateral deals with countries outside of the 27 , but they will not let that happen .

Why's that ?

Don't suppose then you are a member of a buying group of co-op in your farming business.

Care to expand ? or is your smugness sufficient .

Apologies if appeared smug, not intended. Just that in the post to which I replied you thought it be good if UK could be a member of single market and cut trade deals outside the EU 28 club. I have seen similar with farmer 'members' of buying groups and veg co-ops. Want and expect the best the co-op or group can get but if can get better outside either bolloc. the group staff or trade outside. Hey ho, that's all.

Buying groups are for lazy farmers imo , there's plenty of deals if you get off your arse . regards

Bit like as a kid going to birthday parties, who wants their cake, eat it and everyone else's cake and the jellies just for good measure.
Ends up being Nobby no mates

Yep, I've seen them at farm sales,
Telling everyone around what a great deal they have done and pulled one over on everyone else...
Deal of the day, wheelbarrow wheel for a couple of quid

You'.ve spent more than your fair share of time at farm sales . so I guess you know your stuff .:D

That sums up precisely what is wrong with the EU, if it has become so large that the population feels disenfranchised then it has become too large. It is no good making excuses for it, if it can't function democratically then there is a fundamental problem that needs addressing rather than sweeping under the carpet.
