Mag lime seems cheaper than calcium lime and has the same NV - why doesn’t everyone use mag lime ?

It's not as simple as that. High Mg clay soils need calcium, not Mag, or they will become even more sticky and harder to work down. I have high calcium chalk soils, so the bits of gravel, sand or clay cap that actually need pH correction gets mag lime. Mag lime is about £5/t more expensive as it has to come from further away from me.

It depends on the neutralising value (NV), soil type, reactivity etc. @Cab-over Pete or @Mounty are the best to advise in here.

How long does it take for it to break down and be effective if its grit?
I always thought the fine stuff was available quickly.

Is yellow not mag lime and grey stuff calcium?

Ours was same last year. Put it on ploughing this year and worked it in with power harrow.
