Having grown Juliet for a couple of years with good yields but not the easiest to combine and then Marquis last year which didn't yield so well but was easier to cut what is every one out there planting this year ,,,,,, and are there any decent contracts out there

United Oilseeds, Premium Crops, Robin Appel & most of the major merchants will have contracts. @static and I have both grown VT50 for Premium Crops. It's short but in 2 years of growing it I've never harvested it in September.

Juliet. No contract.

Anyone wanting to try some I have 16 bags of the Nulin / VT50 yellow linseed from last year which will be going in the wild bird mixes otherwise which could be quite cheap. I will not be going back o the yellow.

Doesnt thresh. This is the 2nd year in a row. Something about the seed coats - either they are a bit thin or a bit delicate - leaves them just a bit sticky. The sample I have is, again, truely dreadful and will be going for a second spin round in the combine. Not worth it for the premium, and not as easy to market as the brown.

We have had Juliet, Abacus, and one of the easi-cut (Dutchess or Altess) and they were all much of a muchness. Juliet is thicker and taller, and the combine driver prefers to cut a tall crop as it feeds into the header easier than having to use the reel, although I dont drive the combine so dont really know. The yellow yielded fine, but brown is just simpler. I dont know many other growers of yellow but I have had other mumblings of trickier threshing. And for a crop that can be *ahem* fun to combine, I dont need any extra fun.

The best seed is home saved seed, keep it cheap and make a margin, big seed rates are always best, you cannot afford to use big seedrates of new seed.

They have Abacus on the old Farm Marketplace. It was perfectly fine. It has white flowers, so if you were bored and had GPS you could turn your field into a huge Greek flag.

Not sure why you think there is no contract for Juliet??

Unless you are hiding in some far away hills (which I doubt 'Lincoln-ish' is) or somebody with a disreputable past :) then I see no reason why you couldn't have a contract...as there are contracts for Juliet available.

No, I was just saying that I wouldnt be growing it on contract this year. Having looked at spot prices and contract prices over the years I have decided not to bother. I'll cut it and put it all in a bin (with appropriate safety gubbins) and then will sell it as and when to whoever will pay the most on the day.
