I been given an old chainsaw and a couple of the threaded screw holes that hold the plastic covers on have had the threads striped out ,,cant rethread them as the casting hasnt got enough metal to do so .
Would epoxy liquid metal set hard enough to redrill and rethread ,,its a magnesium case

That I dont know, but an engineering shop should. Also the holes perhaps could be tig welded and rethreaded. As they only hold plastic, a quality epoxy metal should be fine, just make sure its all clean before adding the stuff.

Think I might take it to my husky dealer and get their opinion ,,not enough metal to drill out to get a helicoil in ,,its why I thought of the liquid fill stuff

Yes, you will need enough to allow a 4.2mm drill, then have enough structural integrity to tap out the hole ready for the insert.

If the guards are not safety related - you could mix this putty, then ram it in the hole, drill it and tap the hole to suit your 4mm thread:

Is there enough room to put a nut on the inside? Then glue one in position, it will be stronger than using glue to recreate the thread.
No as the thread holes are molded into the casting, this is the top view ,just make out two of the holes

That looks like the stuff ,,its only to hold the top plastic cover over the head and carburetor

can you not use a self tapping screw???

otherwise this stuff is very good, bit thick though but if you can warm the hole up this thick paste turns runny so would be ideal to run in and let the air pockets out filling it nicely. once set for 24 hours its rock hard so should be able to drill and re thread it.

sometime in its life ,some muppet lost the original screws and put in a self tappers ,except the ones they used did more damage ,,trying to get the holes back to the original size

And you haven't any original threads down at the very bottom of the hole where they couldn't damage them with the self tapper? If so, 4mm fully threaded set screws and then tighten the nut?

If you run a nut up on one slightly too long, tighten it to the bottom of the hole (be careful not to break out the casing) then tighten the nut on the cover.

Chuck it in the bin , nobody gives a good chainsaw away.

Are ,see now what you ment ,,it wont work as the cover has to fit slightly behind the flywheel cover and under the chain brake handle ,,its a tight fit as it is without trying to get it over something stuck up ,,filling the holes and tapping them out is the only option
