Condolences to the family :(

Something that's very close to home, and is a constant worry here. We have a very busy yard with wagons, tractors and vans to-ing and fro-ing all day and 4 kids that sometimes think they know it all.
The garden is fenced off and gated but 3 out of 4 can open it now.....or they just climb the fence and lift the small ones over. Something could happen in no time at all.
We've explained the dangers to the kids, played the Apache video on farm safety to them, explained that there's no coming back once you're squashed, etc, etc
But they're kids at the end of the day and everyone in the yard has to expect the unexpected-whether it's a child, cow, someone on the footpath, another vehicle-drive like there IS going to be something round the corner.
This story is very pertinent today, after the apprentice got a talking to this morning about the speed he drives round the yard :mad:(n)

I am not sure how to write this post.

I never like to post articles such as this one, somehow it feels like and intrusion into someones terrible grief, and not being a parent that is something I really can not comprehend how one would feel.

@Flossie makes an important point,

A long time ago, I ran over a child, in no way was it my fault at all, the little boys father actually sent the child across a road and into my path, I was only in a car, and driving very slowly, but it still broke the childs leg.
All I can say, is that it never ever leaves you,it is sickening, I am probably over cautious now especially where children are or are expected to be, what I am trying to say, is, you cant wrap your kids in cotton wool, but you can ensure to some extent you are aware in that machine, drivers who come into your yard are aware.

Be safe, and keep your children safe.

Sort of know how you feel, I hit a young teenage cyclist about 30 years ago through no fault of my own, the ute still has the marks where the bicycle hit the bull bar,, he came off with just a sore bruised leg, but could have been a lot worse had I been going faster.( Was slowing down to turn into a driveway.) O ne of those things you never forget.

You won't like this but if you know that your bigger kids are lifting the little ones over the fence into a busy yard and you haven't put the fear of god into them then you are playing with fire.

Really sorry @llamedos and @FonterraFarmer that you had to go through that. Bless you that you were driving sensibly.

My condolences to the family in the OP. I can't imagine how that must feel. I hope their neighbours get around them and support right now. It may not seem like the right time but they need you now, even if you don't know what to say. Just be there.

This is desperately sad and happens only too often. We have known so many farmers just in our immediate vicinity who have had the misfortune to have been the cause of their child's death, it is appalling. It must be on your consience forever.
I had the bad luck to witness a boy of about seven killed in an accident with a lorry, probably 40 years ago now, and I have never forgotten it.
