Little boy dies on farm in Fife.

Terrible. Can't imagine it.

Feel free to move this to another thread but what rules do you have with your children on the farm out of interest?

My two are 4 and 3 and will come around the farm supervised and play in the odd shed etc. while I watch them. Its quite scary though - the 3 year old knows how to start the quad though he's not allowed and I take the key when he wants to sit on it. They have their own enclosed play area which is secure too. What age do you trust children around a yard? What limits do you put on them around the farm? I will occasionally take them on the quad with me going around in second gear - its not correct health and safety wise but rather that and they know they can come with me now and again then trying to wander alone.

Kids on a quad is EXTREMELY dangerous, far better to take them in tractor, safely in the cab

Simple, it is a farm, a business, a place of work just like any other. The fact we live there makes no difference. Kids do not go anywhere near any machinery.
I've said similar on here many times and been told I am wrong but I haven't heard anything to change my mind yet.

As for those poor souls in the OP I have little I can say other than I sincerely hope they all find peace. My heart truly goes out to them, so very sad.

So do you not take them around the place? Climb on a static tractor? Play with spanners etc. ?

Very very sad and thoughts are with the family at this sad time.

Very difficult situation ref young kids being out and about on farms these days as they love being out and about and the younger age they start being around livestock the better stock person they will become but the problem is these days that farms are very busy places with large machinery moving around all the time where as 20+ years ago tractors etc were much smaller and thus the risk was much less.

No easy answer at the end of the day.

Fully agree guth but don't quite understand about size? I don't think I would want to be run over by a "35" but visibility was much better with little open tractors.

So sorry for the family:(

Sad news , when my oldest was about this age I used to be on the dairy and when I used to be on the morning milking he started appearing down about five in the morning in his pyjamas , he used to climb out his bedroom window , old sash type , we tried everything to stop him eventually hiding all his footwear but he just started wearing his mum's wellies , the scary thing was we had a fresian bull with a wicked temper that you just couldn't turn your back on but my young lad would just come walking past him and the bull didn't bat an eyelid , still gives me shivers when I think what could've happened

This is too painful too for words.

Can we try and turn this into a thread about tips and tricks to keep children safe as a way to stop this happening again. Children will get out and they haven't developed the skills to evaluate risk - we need to help them and contain risks they are exposed to.

Maybe simple things like @Flossie telling the apprentice to drive slower, she knows - as we all do that children will get out.

My suggestion - put the child in a cab and lay their favourite toy in a blind spot, sit them on your knee and show them how easy it is to drive over it without seeing?
