A good friend is fancying a small "world series" Massey Ferguson as a yard/runabout tractor. I said I`d ask on here to see if anyone has one - are they well put together and reliable ?

There's a customer here has one with a loader and he likes it
Plenty of power he says it's a gutsy little thing
Only issue is mirror arms breaking in the frost other than that it has good brakes and is user friendly by all accounts he says

They are excellent little tractors. The 4700 Global that is. They have a far better gearbox and simple modern design than the 300 series, which itself is not a bad tractor but designed in the early 1980's, which is many generations ago.

There is no reason whatsoever that these current models won't last just as long as earlier models and I suspect that they will be just as reliable or better, emission equipment notwithstanding.

When labour becomes so expensive to repair machines relative to the price of new ones, then yes, things become relatively more like 'white goods', but that has always been the case and historically older tractors have been exported from the UK to areas where labour to repair them has been relatively much cheaper than in the UK. It was no different 50 years ago.

They look like a similar kind of deal to the little Case 80-105hp JXU machines.

Basic, simple little tractor, "stockman's tractor"?

The Case units are built by Steyr, and were a bit rubbish, hand throttles snap off and clutches need replacing after 1000 hours...

I've just passed 6000 hours on mine and the clutch lasted until last year, 5000 hours. I think the ones with the 4cyl. 4.5 motors are OK on a small farm.

There is good and bad in every model and user abuse too sometimes.
The chap has sold his tractor now as his tenancy was up for renewal, the owner wanted to steer down a different route of management, so the tenant had to sell up

But by all accounts the tractor didn't put a foot wrong
