Summary
We are looking for a Livestock Assistant to assist and support the National Trust’s in-hand conservation grazing operation in the Cotswolds. The Belted Galloway herd is amongst the largest and most recognised within the organisation. Working closely with the Farm Manager, we are seeking someone who can provide the practical and technical skills to support the livestock management and the wider conservation grazing operation.
This is a full-time role, fixed term for 24 months. Working hours are typically Monday-Friday, but the successful candidate will need to be available for some weekend working (approx. one weekend in four), and occasionally being ‘on call’ outside of working hours e.g. during calving season, or when the Farm Manager is on leave.
Please note contractually you’ll be known as a Farm Worker.

What it's like to work here
You will be joining a group of nine National Trust countryside staff based at the rural estate office at Ebworth, situated in 1,200 acres of National Trust farmland and woodland. Despite its tranquil and picturesque setting, Ebworth is very conveniently located, less than 30 minutes from Cheltenham, Gloucester, Stroud and Cirencester. The team at Ebworth are a progressive and dynamic group of people, who are passionate about their work and enjoy working as a team. You will be working beyond the ownership boundaries of the National Trust, using a variety of contract grazing agreements. In total an area of 185 hectares are currently grazed by the herd, many of which are protected sites including Sites of Special Scientific Interest and National Nature Reserves.
What you'll be doing
You will be supporting the Farm Manager delivering the conservation grazing operation for the National Trust in the Cotswolds. This is a practical role, with some administrative responsibilities. You will be assisting with responsibility for the day-to-day practical and technical management of the cattle onsite. This includes livestock husbandry (the herd is farm-assured), animal transportation, tractor work, fencing and estate management activities.
At times, you will be working on well-visited public sites. You will be working with individuals and organisations to carry out grazing obligations. At all times, you will be acting to protect and enhance the National Trust’s assets and reputation.

Who we're looking for
- Experienced, skilled and confident in practical cattle management. You will need to demonstrate this ability at interview
- A proactive, diligent ‘safe pair of hands’, someone who uses initiative and spots what needs to be done
- An eye for detail with the ability to make accurate records
- Practically very competent and proactive.
- Experience of managing your own safety and others around you, working with Health and Safety requirements
- Someone who really enjoys working in a team environment
- Experienced driving and operating tractors
- Qualified and experienced towing trailers
- Proficient with Microsoft Outlook and Office applications
