Hi all. I have had the Electrition in to do some jobs in the farm and he is saying that all lights and sockets inside a building now have to be water proof and that ceiling roses are not allowed now so he wants to rewire all the buildings with armoured cable and fit led lights. Is this correct. Tia

Probably.
I asked a registered electrician to put waterproof switches in my sheds over 10 years ago and he said that he would only do it by the book, or he'd walk away.
Can't mess around with lecky, it doesn't discriminate.

If you don't want it done just tell him no. He'll have to wire a new build in to new regs but don't see what right he has to tell you he's going to change your others

Don't mind the switches and sockets but the armoured cable seems a bit over the top

Yeah probably right. Think they have to use armour cable up to the consumer box to stop the micces from chewing through it.. after the box ok to use Normal grey stuff, the right thickness of course.

That makes sense. Mine has a thick cable in black casing up to the tripswitch box, the normal looking after that. Never looked that hard at it before!

I have had twin core and earth (the grey flat stuff) eaten by vermin so many times and do all new bits with armoured (swa) now as it is a bit like insurance.

I also fit waterproof switches and sockets as they are comforting - having had the damp fuse the whole farm dozens and dozens of times.

A saving in the end, only 12 sheds left to do and haven't got the money to do them at present.

Not sure how to word this exactly but there's something in HSE legislation that means the last electrician to do work on your farm is somehow responsible for all electrical safety on your farm. So if an electrician wires up a new shed for you and at a later date someone gets electrocuted in an older building he can be held responsible as he is supposed to check the electrical safety of the farm. Not sure exactly how it works but it seems to come from the HSE attitude that someone has to be to blame and the electrician is qualified so he catches it. I've never actually questioned the electrician on this but it was explained to me by dairy engineer who deals with a lot of different electricians as part of his job and isn't the sort of chap to exaggerate/bulls**t.
