livestock farm software

hello, currently upgrading our farm software management system, beef and sheep looking for something reasonably simple but a mobile phone app would be useful, does anyone have any experience with landmark? don't want to spend a fortune, any other software programs suggestions and prices if anyone is willing to share, was also wondering if there are any 'Tru-test' compatible systems as currently have this weigh head. thanks

Shearwell Farmworks or Border Software both give free demos out so you can have a dabble before buying. Both have been around for years (regularly updated) and plenty getting on well with them. Both will work with a Trutest weigh head, capturing the weights via Bluetooth to a Psion handheld. I’ve had that system working for about 10 years now. Pretty sure both are around £400 as standalone PC software? Or around £1500 with the Psion.

Not sure if they will work with phone apps, but I think Shearwell do a separate app version as well?

Have a look at Breedr. It’s a free app and software. Very versatile and links with Tru Test. Beef only at the moment but they keep teasing on the webinars that a programmefor sheep Is under development.
You can upload all your BCMS data direct into it so getting started with your animals is easy.
It really is worth a look and will cost you nothing to look. They’ll even send you a free hat if you go as far as uploading your cattle database.

breedr seems very performance based (weighing etc) and didn't really shine for me because of this. I'm more interested in breeding performance and final value (stores).
Farm Matters I've tried and found excellent, Neil is keen on the job, very helpful and takes suggestions in his stride. We are still using farmplan out of licence because of historical records. When I come to let go of the history I'll be at farm matters like a rocket.

Do not buy the farmplan software.

I use farm matters great program works with most devices for recording wieghts etc have an ezi wiegh head on my cattle crush and very simple to put data from it into farm matters software has a web based app that is great for using on the go and works from an Android or Apple device (if you have the misfortune of having an apple device) I have used a few software packages in the past

shearwell - is a decent enough package but very expensive for what it does and very limited mobile app

Agriwebb will promise the earth and blow smoke up your arse till they have your money and then will tell you the things that you were promised before you signed up won't be looked at for at least the next year and when you dig deeper into the software you realise they can not cross check with bcms to check for errors in your records and that alot of the features are very basic and don't do anything that is required to track performance etc accurately

I went to farm matters as I use UHF tags in my cattle and they are the only software package that connect directly with the UHF reader and are actively developing the software to work more in line with it as well as Neil has added multiple additions to the software to allow me to send data directly to the Luing society and record Body condition scores more easily on my heard as only a few.
It is also very easy and intuitive software to use and does not cost an arm or a leg with back up second to none.
Also had a months free trial on it before switching and Niel is always at the end of the phone if I have any questions.
Also does sheep on an individual or flock bases I use it on a flock bases at the moment and it's very easy to use
Hope this helps

Farm matters without a doubt, I have used this for about 5 years now and to be honest if I can use it ANYONE can use it. It saves me so much time and it does all my registrations to the AACS weights, pedigrees etc if you can think of anything this program doesn't have Neil will get it updated for you.
Literally I don't know why you wouldn't use farm matters. You will wish you did it years ago.

Are you not using the farmworks app Neil?

It compliments the psion quite well,
Easier to navigate than the psion, but you can't record as much (such as weights or birth traits)

Extra £30 on the annual charge for the app licence

I’ve not looked at it tbh. I suspect the mention of an extra £30/yr stopped me looking in to it.🤐

Maybe I should do, as my phone is always with me on the quad, the Psion less so these days.

What’s everyone using to collect data/numbers in the field with farm matters. Really don’t get on with Shearwell main program. Like the app and shows where they could go in the future but there is no major upgrade coming in the foreseeable future. Think I would miss the Psion though so what do you use. TIA

You can use the web page app on your phone which is very good for most tasks.
I also bought a Panasonic toughbook and use it at the side of the crush and it is a fantastic price of kit bit the phone app does most things from your phone and it sends it to your software package over the internet very easy to use. Get a free trial and play about with it you won't look back ( you can phone Niel any time and he will answer and talk you through it all)

Thanks. Sounds like it’s changed a lot since I looked a couple of years ago. Will have another look.

Farm matters sounds like everybody’s favourite... I do a hell of a lot of movements so could do with getting a bit more technical about it too keep on top... what readers are compatible for it ? As I only have a cheap reader which I’m thinking about changing for a race panel reader as I seem too be sh!t at wanding sheep and they go through the race anyways between moves normally....

Thanks for the feedback Milkloss, we're updating the app breeding tools in the new year and definitely reach out to you to get your thoughts on them.
