Out of interest, are you, and those members that have liked your post, all set about reducing numbers to play a waiting game?

I’m just carrying on regardless, with gradual expansion from home bred females (learnt my lesson, again, from buying in last year ). Other than the odd elite pedigree, I can’t see being daft enough to buy ewes in again.

I’m same as you. Breed from own flock. I still think it is the most profitable path. Although might need some fresh genetics soon.

I would go for it. Plenty of us have done it with finance in the past. You don’t live long enough to develop a business without it, those that do have a fairy godmother or something.
Only thing that would put me off is the price stock is at the moment. Keep in mind they could go down as well as up

Yes I bought hoggs and lambs in may at £260 most of the lamb's have now gone at £120 plus leaving a good shearling at £140 thought I was crackers at the time (Suffolk x)

Those I saw were right hoggs. Should be some real shearlings by next spring!

This is what would put me off. When stock is cheap I’ll borrow as much as I can from the Bank. While it’s as dear as this at the moment I’m very hesitant too borrow on the strength of “they won’t drop”.
Loans need too be serviced, sheep like too die. Some things are certain!
But good luck if you take the plunge, just be very careful

Prices are high at the moment but personally I’ve always found it easier to make money when prices are high.

I imagine a business loan through your bank would be cheaper, does anybody know if the bounce back loan is still available? That would certainly be a viable option given the cheap interest rate

Everyone said these things last year now look what happened. People said mule ewe lambs are far to dear at £85-£95 but they look bloody cheap now don't they. Got a new customer who I contract shepherd ewe lambs for, we paid £85 for her ewe lambs and the theaves are going to be sold for £160/£170 (I would think) so have doubled in value. She is ecstatic as thought that I would be a money loosing exercise. You have to be in it to win it, that the fun of farming. BTW I wish I also had bought 200 more because have the ground and food for this this summer.

Off topic so sorry. But do you not get concerned that your naive sheep will get into someone else’s and bring back something that you don’t have (abortion, codd, scab etc.) could be very costly if your sheep haven’t been exposed to much before.

Considering fat is between £10 and £15 up could you not stretch that to £1.50? !
