Either put a reserve on or sell subject, bit of a nightmare but isn't everything at the moment. Can't see many markets being allowed to stay open for much longer unfortunately

the argument is it’s part of the keyworkers programme. Some jobs are going to have to have interaction as we look to keep people safe healthy and fed. Marts will have to cancel fancy show and sales and basically tell anyone selling to drop sheep or cattle off to not interact. Buyers can easily stand metres apart. Any over 70s selling should go home.

You can't feel the finish on a fat Hogg via live chat. Weight alone is no indication of finish. Can probably sell store cattle like that but I'd want to feel sheep before buying. delivering lectures is nothing like buying stock for your business.

I'm sure that the drover (or similarly qualified person) put their hands on them and assess BCS for the abattoirs.

If you wanted stock for yourself, then buy off farm - it's not hard to maintain a distance between you and the vendor when buying animals.

The flip side of that is that technically we don't need a live market because they all end up in an abbatoir. I don't necessarily agree with that but if don't follow advice then they will be forced to stop. Look at what's come into force in Germany now.

If the government close markets then maybe they could decree a price that the abattoirs must pay , rather than leave it to market forces . Bring back a kind of war ag.
I see no need to close fat stock markets. They can be run on a drop and go basis with only market staff and a small number of buyers

From the tracker thread

as in the tracker thread if there is anything i can do to help i will do

i have already spoken to a few developer friends who say a online solution with live streaming and FSA approved bidding etc could be up and running very quickly if demand existed

if auctions are interested and someone is interested in helping coordinating this with them we could make it happen very quickly

this doesn’t have to replace live auctions but it would give buyers choice if they didn’t want to attend, more potential buyers should help sellers and auctions

it’s never going to be as good as being there but maybe the only choice ?

live streaming 4k images can help give buyers a idea of how the stock is

Loads of people taking a holiday. The auctioneer who has supposed to do a valuation for me is in self isolation. My vet is telling people he cant not do work as he is in isolation. He was seen in the local garage shop with a bad cold buying crisps and chocolate. Sheep feed deliveries are late due to drivers being off work

Ayr cancelled at short notice this morning, apparently staffing at abattoirs is the problem - not sure if it's slaughtermen or vets.
Lanark turned folk away citing lack of demand
Same story at St Boswells. Sale went ahead eventually but the hoggs I saw sold were about £1.70-1.80. My ewes never came off the trailer!

The question is, genuine issue in the processing chain or a good excuse to pull the price back?
