Lleyns and Mastitis

Don't get me wrong I love my lleyns and think they suit are farm perfectly however we never had a problem with mastitis till we started with them. We've had big teats at lambing time that needed stripping out and jabbed two again this morning. Don't think we've over done them with feed before lambing as they quite lean and kept feeding them outside unlike last year and still having problems.

Has anyone bred it out of them? We're culling very hard for bad udders already but getting sick of culling good 2/3 crop ewes just cos of bags

I find instances of mastitis pretty low in my Lleyns most years. But this 'spring' has been savage on bags.

My homebred ewes are a lot better of their bags than the ewes I bought in, in 2015 though (n)

Can't say the Lleyns are more or less likely to get mastitis. This year it's been a variety, including a Charollais that have got it. Incidence is less than feared, but a little more than usual.

Blaming weather stress all through winter, with staying indoors far longer than usual before and after lambing - and not enough straw.

Is it black udder? Or the ordinary sort?

No issues with our Lleyn’s, been excellent mothers. Only problems we seem to have is feet- lots of Shelly hoof last year. Will be buying in more gimmers later on in the year.

I've found Lleyns to susceptible to mastitis, the first year I had some they made up less than 10% of the flock , but had about 90% of the mastitis cases!
In 2016 I had 126 going to the tups, the oldest being 3 years old, in 2017 I had to buy in 20 to get the number back to the same number, after mastitis, deaths and a few empty which seems very high in a young flock

We’ve some we have never touched, can hardly see a bag yet rearing two great lambs, and others whose bag is huge and just have average ones. Fingers crossed my home breds will be better however had to catch one last night who was coming down with it. We went with lleyns because we wanted a breed we could improve and adopt to our farm so hopefully will cull it out, just need a new stock tup who breeds good udders!
