Have a Jcb 525/58 1990year, these last few days I’ve noticed a problem. When you start it it won’t go backwards straight away, forward is instant when you move the lever, select reverse and it will sit there for 5 to 10 seconds before moving. It will then shuttle instantly until it’s switched off and then the pause on reverse again? It’s oil is spotless and is changed annually as is filters and screen. It’s as if the oil runs back when stopped and then has to re prime itself?? Is that even possible? It has plenty of push and when mucking out. Any ideas? @ACEngineering cheers

Reverse clutch pack seals leaking.
Transmission Overhaul time I'm afraid.

Oh dear, that doesn’t sound too good, will it cause a problem if I keep using it? Is it a big or expensive job? What’s caused it to come on all of a sudden or is it just one of those things? Cheers

Just old age and worn out! Not a 5 minute job no, prop shafts off, drop transmission out and drag under front axle.
If you want to get it out and strapped on a pallet i can send courier to collect and get it repaired for you, although for your own piece of mind you might want to get someone to pressure test the reverse pack?

Its not going to be electrical if its just a delayed take up of drive in reverse cause electric is just on or off.

only things you can do external is check the electric connections (although a i say not going to be your problem here)
Check the oil level, assuming you would have done this already and it clearly has oil in it or it wouldn't drive forward!
You could replace the gasket under the f/r solenoids, its possible its blown internally on the reverse side but its unlikely IMO.

you could Check the clutch pack pressures, but as it drives forwards you clearly got forwards pressure even if it is possibly/likely lower than ideal due to old age and wear etc, and as no reverse you wont have any pressure there until it starts to drive and then it is almost certainly going to be lower than it should or drop off the hotter it gets :ROFLMAO:

you want 150psi in the clutches hot or cold with an instant take up of drive.

Right , so new tranny cooler installed and water and oil seperate , got the same issue as the OP , poor pickup on f/r presumably cooked the clutch pack , where can I find parts list to assess the repairability .

it has probably got plastic clutch pistons in it and the water has damaged them, was a stupid idea JCB had years ago. if it has plastic pistons and thrust washers then will need to be modified to aluminuim pistons and steel thrusts.

Its really not a job i would recommend you start trying to do yourself blind IMO, common to need the casings bored and sleeved too, if you want to get it out and strap it to a pallet i can give you the number of a guy to send it too that will sort it for you, he might not be that far away from you actually so maybe you can take it too him rather than pallet it.

That's fine . I can do that , any idea of of cost to do the work ? otherwise I'll chop it in , problem is s/h handlers have gone mental last 12 months , bit of a conundrum .

You'll have to discuss that with him, I not had one done in a while, it's also impossible to say for sure till its stripped down and all its problems revealed.

Hi ACEngineering, you seem to be pretty knowledgable about this problem, I have exactly the same issues but have stripped the gearbox down. Clutch basket worn and has a nasty lip in the internal splines.
worn gears and a bearing surface r
that is shot. Getting parts seem to be an issue, any ideas?
