Sounds like a good idea, but as can probably be seen by the posts in this thread, all the good mechanics seem to be turning work down on a daily basis. I do find the turning good jobs down whilst working on rubbish comment very true and chuckled as I seem to be in this situation all too often. But like Phil P says, you've got to try and offer the best service you can do, sometimes this means turning work away so you can offer a better more timely service. The question is, would I want someone who's quiet to be working on my equipment, when most who are very good at what they do are always busy and turning work away?

Don't get me wrong there may be good lads out there who've yet to establish a good name for themselves and need to build up a round, but I'm betting the lads/lasses on this thread all finished their last employment and started spannering as an independent days later with a nearly full if not full schedule?

As others have said, dealers sometimes get it wrong, this isn't a reason not to trust them as I'll openly admit I've got it wrong at times. Being a dealer mechanic isn't easy your required to know lots about a lot of different machines, many times I was dispatched to a job where one of the other lads was far better suited, likewise the other way round so they job probably on occasion took longer than it should? This is a reason some independents like ACE and myself specialise in certain jobs and can generally provide a more cost effective service, along with much lower overheads.
All good points but I think charging a full day to get the crank pulley off a tractor to replace the fan belt is unreasonable, even if it does have a front pto. I could have done that bit myself for 100th of the cost :banghead:

HCF above. You sound like a farmer.;)

If you are selling yourself by the hour then a specialisation is certainly the best way to operate, less competition to start with. It can appear to be limiting and may cause offence, but you have to learn to say no for your own sanity. I do however admire folks who are willing to work on chicken poop spreaders one day and combine electrics the next.
