Log splitter options

Hi , what’s everyone’s thoughts on the best brand of log splitter ? Is pto driven much of an advantage over straight from tractor hydraulics ? Thanks

Pto drive means a grey Fergie will split as much as a new £100,000 tractor. 19 ton posch here hasn't been stopped yet. Just leave the tractor on 1000 pto above tickover
Don't think a grey Fergie would run my Posch, it stalls the 35 fairly easily.
As for the OP, I'd say Posch is the best brand. Whether you need the best brand is a different question and it depends what you are splitting, how much and what for. I'd say for domestic use a basic Oxdale on a 40+ HP tractor will take some beating.

I was meaning value wise. An older tractor won't pump fast enough or with high enough pressure. Cycle times with independent pump would be quicker

Horizontal or vertical log splitter.
I have a Uniforest 23tonne
vertical splitter with a with a winch on it which is very useful.
To be honest my cone splitter has made my Binderberger 40 tonne splitter almost redundant.
I think the pto driven self contained hydraulics have a lot going for them but everything comes at a price.

I think Elf & Safety have insisted that modern ones need two hands for operation. I have an old one and because I value myself, I haven't chopped a hand off yet. Much easier to operate. But not for the foolish.

I have a Thor with twin pumps so electric or pto, hardly ever use the pto as it sits in the shed ready to use, nice and quiet and not using diesel or running up hours on a tractor. Two speed down and auto return to any preset height means it is fast and safe especially when on rings which is mainly what I do, can do billets up to 120cm. I should think most of the European brands would have similar features. Of course extra features mean extra £££

We have an Oxdale TM400, we run on a MF135 @ 1300rpm, plenty of pressure.

I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Odd reply.
In my opinion yes

I remember now. You're the man who made a song and dance about getting a standard pto shear bolt and shipped them in from America
Yes, you are correct. My fault but I'd expect the person who sells them to know about the wearing parts and where to get them. And if the customer doesn't know that he will be treated with civility and respect.

Buy Oxdale and the insults come free. Cheat me once, shame on you. Cheat me twice, shame on ME! Make sure you don't get cheated too.

Made in Britain? Of course they are!🤣

I can 100% assure you they are made on the industrial estate 2 miles from me. Also run a state of the art laser profiling shop and powder coating setup. Everything is made and assembled in house except the range of del morino machine that comes in from Italy.
you'd know better than me though

I bought a big fancy Posch Hydro combi and my missus said I had to sell the others if I bought it. No idea why she said it or why I listened because it's nowt to do with her.
Anyway, wish I hadn't listened because the Oxdale is missed.

Ours must be over 40 years old and still winds it’s way through anything you put in front of it. Couldn’t be simpler.
