Log splitting

has anyone with a log burning biomass bought themselves a good processing unit? We get someone in to do it ATM, 1000£ for 3 days splitting, I think it's worthwhile buying a 4/5 grand processing unit and do it when we have a spare hour instead of stressing when we get folk in to do it.

It's a no brainier at that cost.

I've had a Hakki Pilke 37 Expert on hire for the last couple of days, it belongs to the chap who does our chipping and he charged me £50/day (machine only obviously).

2 of us got 16t of Beech done in those two day.

I was thinking the same, but with a chipper, the chippers that can handle the decent sized loge are silly money though, will not be happening any time soon! How difficult was becoming a self-supplier for the RHI though?

Iv seen that machine on the internet, do they take a lot of maintenance ? I agree it's far too expensive to get someone in to do it. How much are they? Might get something like that on hire

Not got one yet... Currently hire one in, processor and hydraulic log deck i can process an arctic load in a day, but i have it set up to perfection now and not filling trailers like i was last year.

I would get someone in and @dgforestryltd.co.uk are the men to speak too. Awesome bit of kit and can process some serious stuff to a high quality in a small amount of time. They spend a lot of time in your area too.

its relatively simple.

We started off as just a self supplier but are now on the bsl register.

What sort of HP would that require on the tractor?

Very low, we run ours on a JD 6400 with the pto speed set at 1000 rpm but the engine only just over tick over but I know of someone who runs one off a 80hp case . They really dont need much as it only needs a pto drive and the hydraulics are all self contained on the processor

£350 a day need 3 of us to achieve that speed though (my father, wife and myself). 1 on the processor, 1 doing odd jobs (putting logs on elevator if they arnt going up properly (and other jobs) and 1 with the manitou loading or heaping the logs up high (has to change from bucket to tines) or pushing them into a pile with the scraper tractor.
