congleton cattle market stall work still lives on, in a field we have away from the farm, used to catch cows and trailer them home

Here's the words as the meme blanks a few of them:

Men Of The Mart
They look quite heavy as they unload, trotting in to the pen,
Impartial looks from them droving men,
Eight cows with calfs at foot,
Dealer looks ....tells me they are good “but”
There’s alway a “but”in the dealers eye and I’m not going to even ask him why? ....just a heavy sarcastic sigh,
I turn and walk away... it’s his choice to bid today,
Cattle steaming in the ring
Smells of cud and sweet manure ,
This is the mart with its magical allure,
Weather gouged features, cut from granite faces,
Stick held hands that
have grappled, gripped and gone to unspeakable places,
Fingers grime pitted
heads covered with hats that some loved once knitted,
Stained, button missing, sting trussed tied rain coats,
Hiding beneath shirts with tide stained throats,
Grey old trouser lost from their jacket long ago,
Left on the wet seat of tractor or under feed bags in the barrow,
Standing in wellies these strong hard men of the soil,
Experience learned from years of graft and toil,
Once strong backs now beginning to bow,
Limps and shuffles starting to show,
Mind still sharp as the surgeon scalpel,
Age dose not bother these men, they are farmers ...gods own and what a great example,
Caretakers of the land one and all,
Men who may stoop but will for ever stand tall.

Whilst I love all these old photos and remember fondly the odd visit with Dad and various uncles, I don’t like market ways and never have.

I remember Dad and other farmers having arguments with auctioneers ringside because bids weren’t taken, were taken too high or the wrong price knocked down at the last split second. Auctioneers favouring bidders and ignoring the last bid to knock stock down for a prearranged price.

I dare say plenty will disagree but it can’t be denied.

Back in February I spent a morning at a market and it just reminded me of why I dislike that way of selling. Along the lines of finished lambs there was no interest shown by buyers too engrossed in their phones. Many pens just knocked down for the previous pens price with no asking the vendor.

I saw a customer on the way out and he agreed, saying he’s thinking of not bothering again.

It’s a club, an organisation that if your face fits you’ll do well.

I've also seen all the things you mention but this year the buyers have had to be on their toes as the trade has kept up throughout the season. We're very lucky in our area in that we have a choice of at least ten markets within 40 miles so that if an auctioneer is faffing about, customers will use another mart. All our lambs have been sold through markets this year but due to tb restrictions, cattle have had to go on the hook.

Bought this sale ring from a farm sale a few years back ( now using it as part of a makeshift sheep handling system, with a view to doing something more permanent) I am told it is from Ely ( Cambridgeshire) livestock market which apparently used to stand where Waitrose is now. Although not far away from where we are , not somewhere I have heard anything about. Anyone know anything about that market ?

Does anyone have any photos of Slough Cattle Market run by Buckland & Son? It was near Wexham Park Hospital, but gave way to housing about 30 years ago.
Also Reading Cattle Market, run by Thimbleby & Shorland on Great Knollys Street?
I frequented them with Dad in the 70's when I was a nipper...in a green Ford D750 cattle lorry reg number FKX 441G. Strange what one remembers!

I went to the school just above and that s how I remember i remember Hexham hubbocks and rickerbys their as well .
My first two years of Grammar school were spent trudging up and down that hill at Fellside and past the mart, before moving up to the the high school at the far end of the town.
Rickerbys and Hubbucks are now near the new mart, down next to the Tyne.
It's a much better location for space, parking etc, although it does flood on occasion!
