With due respect, what exactly did Lord Plumb do, or which positions did he hold, to engender the affection with which he always seemed to be regarded farmers?
Serious question, because it must have been 1970s and 80s, before I was taking much notice.

Past President of the NFU
Became a Conservative MEP and then President of the EU 1987-89, the only British person to have held the post.

The Sad Passing of The Lord Plumb of Coleshill DL - Our Founder and Patron

15th April, 2022
The Henry Plumb Foundation was created by Henry to help to support and encourage new blood to come into farming and to pump prime projects to help farmers survive and thrive in their increasingly challenging environment. The Foundation is in a healthy position to continue on the succesful path it has been travelling for the past ten years. (some 130 succesful scholars to date) News of the passing of our Founder and Patron, The Lord Plumb of Coleshill DL was released this morning Good Friday 15th April and tributes have been coming in from a wide variety of agriculturally orientated organisations as the information has been assimilated.

Leading the tributes was a comment from Minette Batters who said “Today British farming has lost one of its greatest ever advocates and the NFU has lost its greatest ever President”

The Trustees of the Henry Plumb Foundation reacted by drawing attention to the fact that while the Foundatiion had lost its Patron and Founder, the agricultural industry had lost one of its greatest ever champions and one of its most accomplished statesmen. The list of the organisations which Henry had been involved in is legion,he’d served as President of the NFU for 9 terms, President of NSA for some 4 terms and Independent Chairman of The National Cattle Breeders Association for a similar period. He’d also held office on ploughing match committees, as well as being Master of The Worshipful Company of Farmers. When he demitted office as President of NFU he was elected as an MEP to the European Parliament representing the Cotswold region and later elected to be its President. The only Englishman to have held that office. It is significant that even though he spent many decades in politics of one sort and another he never compromised on his honesty, integrity, his kindness and inevitable good humour.
Chairman of The Henry Plumb Foundation, John Thorley said that all trustees felt they had lost a caring and enduring friend and mentor. Speaking more personally John said Henry had been one of his closest allies in a number of situations for more than half a century. "I will miss his advice, wisdom and sense of humour and reality more than I can say". I know we all will.
The Henry Plumb Foundation was created by Henry to help to support and encourage new blood to come into farming and to pump prime projects to help farmers survive and thrive in their increasingly challenging environment. The Foundation is in a healthy position to continue on the succesful path it has been travelling for the past ten years (some 130 succesful scholars to date).

While the Foundation has lost its founder, his spirit and ethos will live on and efforts redoubled to ensure the long term viability of this invaluable legacy of Henry Plumb. To this end the Trustees take this opportrunity to invite all individuals and organisations who see the good sense of the Foundation and all it stands for to take this oppportunity to contribute to the funds.

In conclusion it is worth mentioning that Henry remained aware of developments in the daily running of the organisation and knew exactly what was taking place right up until a few days before he died.

He would tell this great joke about a Grocer’s response to a Supermarket having just opened in the town, which went something like this:

A flashy new Supermarket is opened in town and the Grocer was losing all his customers.
So the Grocer pays the Supermarket a visit and sees an advert in its window advertising Pineapples for £2 each.
So the Grocer goes back to his shop and puts a poster in his window, offering Pineapples for £1.50 each.
The Supermarket gets wind of this and puts a new poster up offering Pineapples for £1 each.
Then the Grocer reciprocates by offering them for £0.50 each.

A few days pass, then the Supermarket manager turns up at the Grocer and asks him why and how he can be selling Pineapples at such a loss, when even the Supermarket is now making a loss on its Pineapples, because they cost them over a £1 to buy from the Wholesaler?

The Grocer’s response was “I don’t sell Pineapples!”

RIP Henry.
