Lorry driver shortage

Wondered when someone would pick up on that ;) ;) all legal and above board as a loading shovel loads my load (walking floor) so its the same as someone booking a break when on a bay at the RDC whilst they are being loaded/unloaded. Tacho on other work for the 1 min to open the sheet at the beginning and few minutes to tidy up the sides and sheet up after.

Oh and if you mean why a 30 minute and not 45, well it'll be a split break so had the 15 earlier in the day either loading somewhere else or waiting to load etc, also helps keep the working time directive breaks satisfied :)
Yet another bloody area to be careful with during loading. If you are on break, and sat in the cab while, in your case, a loading shovel loads your trailer, DVSA take a very dim view of this if you have an in cab weight clock !

Trades are often seen as lesser in academic terms as they are , the ones with degree`s often teach the trades , you need a degree to be a teacher , getting a degree is no big deal if you put the effort in .

An Academic (or anyone) only has to look around them to see the results of the “less educated”.
Magnificent architecture, infrastructure, engineering, food is ALL the result of hard physical work.
Most appreciate that but it seems that a few posh boys have no comprehension of that fact.

I see what your saying but,
DVSA would probably have a big interest in that behaviour, as I assume your on break between tare and gross weighing. And weigh ticket times and break times will match,
I would be very careful on that, as you only need a not your fault fatal accident,
And you could be looking at a holiday inside,
I know one driver that had a car pull out of a side road, old woman was killed as he hit her, the then vosa went through everything including tacos for that week, he was good to go as all in order

Tacho in trucks, nothing stopping a truck driver doing his hours in a truck then driving a non tacho van fir extra hours or a taxi, laws are only any use for those that abide by them
Went on a coach holiday to Italy few years ago,two young lads sharing driving the coach, on our return pulled into South mimms services, both their hours were up ,handed over to relief drivers then they got in a car to drive home to base in Newcastle.
Not safe to drive the coach but ok to carry on in a car.

That sounds like that haulier owner is stubborn, good on the drivers imo, they like working for the guy but want better pay to match other companies.

At least they asked and didn't just leave.
What would your thoughts be if you had7 workers and they said same to you
would you just give it to them ??

I also see what your saying, but that could be the same for anyone who books a break in a rdc or even the same places we go where they load bales of waste, they weigh in and out just the same. Some of our lads have been stopped and no issues found. What would be an issue is putting it on break as soon as you stopped and then just driving off after loading, this is why I always show other work at each end of the break (for un sheeting and the resheeting and clearing the overhanging bits). Also know they are keen on cross matching fuel tickets to breaks for when some try and get a 15 on the pumps.

This thread prompted me to look into my lapsed LGV class 1 which I did not do the medical for when I was 45,now being 50.

Apparently according to this paragraph I copied it can be resurrected.

Your existing licence will only expire if you do not complete your medical standards test when you reach the age of 45 or if you miss one of the obligatory medicals; it’s mandatory that all HGV drivers undertake a medical once every five years. If you do lose your entitlement to your licence through one of these causes, however, you simply have to complete a medical and send off for your licence again. Under the current rules, the DVLA will issue you another licence as there is no time limit.

Cushy cab and £1k a week,hmm,tempting.

(not keen on sitting in traffic jams so not for me.)

I can 100% confirm that decent truck firms are paying over a £1000 a week for 4 nights out in a brand new truck with every option ticked, I know this as I have got one such job today with a very good firm in the construction sector that a few guys I know work there and recommended to me. yes its away, but guaranteed home every Saturday and Sunday WHATEVER THE WEATHER! In all honesty what do we all do of an evening? Eat, watch telly and sleep.
As a combine, forager, pa1+2 operator with over 20yrs experience I’ve had enough. I know others in the same boat and can see there is a big problem for ag in the next 5-10 yrs
Farming is not a career I would recommend to anyone anymore and I honestly never thought I would think like that.
Agriculture needs to wake up and realise it’s 2021
We're wide awake thanks. But produce prices are decades, or even centuries behind. So, it'll either be one man bands, robots, or food shortages because of lack of staff which will eventually drag prices into the 21st century. Assuming food isn't all imported in the future that is......

You be amazed over the years what many people have designed and made without tertiary education , the fact that some people haven't got a degree shouldn't limit ones opportunities or chances.
I wouldn't be amazed as I read a lot , you seem to be missing the point , getting a degree proves to potential employers you are capable of studying and learning new things , it shows you have some self discipline and can be relied on to see things through to the end , oh and you learn one hell of a lot about your chosen subjects.
People who have great ideas but little formal education have little idea how to apply things and rely on others to put them into practice or things never happen, consequently those who are switched on are limiting their own opportunities and chances.
Do you really think manufacturers like Ford, JCB , JLR , BAE etc want designers and engineers who are self taught in their garage or bedroom ? they have no idea about systems , latest tech or production.
Degree courses are open to anyone in England and you`ll get finance what ever your financial status , you will only start to pay it back once you start to earn over £26k so its a no lose deal for most.

You would also need to do your CPC.
So that's a week in a classroom,
A medical and then sat in traffic all day.
What's not to like?

Yes it's the actual weight that needs to be under 3500kgs

A family of four, a fullish fuel tank, holiday luggage, a couple of bikes on a rack and a gas bottle or two stowed in the caravan, and you're in trouble.

Not unknown for DVSA to check weigh vehicles c/w occupants at Motorway Services
Actual weight and plated weight. The latter might require downrating of vehicle (tricky, I’d imagine) or caravan (easier) and then keeping below the lower threshold.

They wonder why they are short of drivers ! Reading this it’s a sh!t job but the hoops you have to jump through to get on the road is phenomenal ! I quite fancy my class one for a bit part time driving but to hell with that I don’t need all that bull sh!t in my life just to drive a wagon ffs .
I’ve always said, a lorry driver gets moaned at for being early / late or they just don’t want you there anyway
a thankless job in the most
a lot of farmers complain about loading times in winter and then wonder why there’s a shortage in harvest
