Just about to buy a lorry purely for tractor & plough transport. Who is best for insurance? and what should I be paying?

Called the NFU this afternoon and wasn’t impressed with £1,600 quote. Must be able to do better than that.

18t, limited mileage, kept in locked farmyard, good history, happy to have a fairly large excess but do want full comp.

It’s a modern lorry, 10yrs old.

I’d love a classic but Im on the South Coast and I want to get all over the country ploughing over the next 5-10yrs so want something modern and hopefully reliable.
Dont be put off by age, my 1986 MAN carries my kit all over the country, often towing a caravan. Repairs in the last five years were replacement of the rear wheel bearings.
Autohome breakdown cover is available to get you home, and as mentioned insurance is very little.

1986 is getting on a bit , ok if you want to do the repairs and fettling yourself and on a shoestring budget, for classic insurance with nfu it has to be over 15 years old, but no one will touch Walker Midgley on price of something newer for private use only,
As for recovery, Autohome breakdown cover, for lorries has to be 20 years old before they cover it, and even then they will only tow you to repair centre, which is good to the point of the £120 a year cover as 1 tow off the motorway can cost several hundreds of pounds, yet getting towed to nearest repair centre is cheap, but on arrival you soon find out you will get your pants pulled down on repair cost, and has to be paid for before you get your lorry back,

The firm i am on with now, won't only come out and try to repair on road side and only paying for parts, which are billed at month end, so no need to pay there and then, this includes tyres,, but if it cannot be repaired they will lowloader it anywhere in the country on the mainland for you at no extra cost, so this can be back home or to a local trusted repair centre near home, even if its 500 mile away you breakdown, all for £189, afar better value for money

I have nothing to do with this breakdown insurance company, but I have got a discount on my policy due to the business I have put their way, so if interested pm me and I will forward the details

Interesting John, When i took out the Autohome cover, I had the choice of being returned home, or taken to a repair centre, and no mention of the lorry age. Think I have a few checks to make!

If its a 7.5 tonne horsebox, its should be cheap, because they think its doing few miles driven carefully.
Horsebox insurance is fairly cheap, as there is lots of them about, and there is a good market for insurance for them,
Sadly not the case for tractor ploughmen, not so many of them about compared to horse boxes, you only need to look about in the parking area at Ploughing matches, mostly duel purposes vehicles, or company owned lorries, not many privately run lorries, thats why most companies are either not interested, or price the job so its worth it

I read an old trucks magazine, regular ads for insurance appear

Footman James 0333 207 6022

Adrian Flux 0800 085 5000

Whittlesey Insurance Servives 01733 208117

I'm thinking these people are in the low mileage market and may be able to help, could be worth a few phone calls.

get a demount horse box body insure it as both flat and horse box ;)

I think that would be a lot easier!

These insurance companies do not like the private use element even though they insure lots of horse boxes. They’re either unwilling or unable to make the comparison.

It annoys me that an 18t horse box would be much cheaper and a classic lorry doing exactly the same job would also be much cheaper!

I’m still waiting for a few quotes to come in, hopefully someone will come good In the end.

I wasn't suggesting you should insure it as a classic, but talk to the people and be honest about what you want to do with it.

Absolutely agree, don’t want to be the wrong side of the law or insurance company. It’s just that classics and horse boxes are comparable for cost.... unless you’re an insurance company!

I had Autohome cover and don't get me wrong it is good policy meet my needs perfectly as John will concur he knows the story their policy has limitations which probably would exceed your needs unless you are only doing lots of local matches its perfect, further away can be an issue as there is a cap on the amount that can be claimed against the policy in a year, HGV recovery is expensive and even though I was about two hours from home it swallowed up most of the amount that could have been claimed against my policy and I wouldn't be sure they would recover your caravan too.

The amount is £1000 and the premium is more because of the caravan, so I would expect that to be covered.
