Lorry Insurance

Anyone had their renewal from Walker Midgley?

Mine has gone up from £295.40 last year to £367.08 for this year as they now have different categories for their insurance, 5000kg, 5000kg to 7500kg and then over 7500kg.

Will be looking around to see if I can get a better quote. Might see if the NFU will insure me this time, but their 3000 miles per annum is low. Not that I am sure how they know how many miles you do, unless they ask for the tacho on each renewal?

Regards

3000 miles will be fine next year, wont be anywhere to go, the excuses used to cancel this years events will still be valid, even if some good people did pick up the gauntlet, and run very successful events.

I spoke to the local NFU, but they said they could not insure me. Might phone the head office again. :)

Been offered £270 all in from Cherished Car Insurance with 5000 miles PA. Have couple of months to get it sorted though. :)

Might be because the lorry is not old enough, I am with NFU, and my premium for 2019 was £80.00. However, when I took this policy out, it was sold as fully comp, it now is third party, fire and theft! Its their vintage commercial policy. Some NFU offices claim not to know about this policy, so may need educating!

Trevor, try the Bridgenorth office in Shropshire. They insured me when my local office said my truck didn't qualify for the vintage policy. From memory £120 fully comp. They were very helpful.

Applies to front tyre and single tyres if fitted to the rear axle. Dual rear tyres can be any age.
Still on coaches and buses and mini buses, from Feb probably wont matter, be no use for the lorry anyway, its off the road now, may well stay that way.

I was advised of this change in 2019 when I tool my lorry for a test at that time, if used commercially and tyres fitted anywhere even rear and duelled and were over ten years old the business would get a call where you had to explain your tyre monitoring policy and would be required to replace them no doubt but as mine is Private HGV the examiner wasn't sure what would happen to be frank nothing did but you still have to keep an eye on your tyres for issues and cracking etc. and replace when necessary, wan't even mentioned at the MOT in 2020, I will have to have a better read of this article all the same.

I also was told by the tester in 2019 but he said it would be in for my test this year which should have been in March but was extended. I fitted 2 new front tyres but it looks as if I would have been OK until February. Just as well it is done as no temptation to leave them until the next test and get stopped by the Gestapo.

Front tyres going bang is not a nice experience, plus the damage it can do to the plastic bodywork! I had one go bang a couple of years ago on the dual carriage way at 60’ish, it made a right mess...
It has happened twice to me exactly as you describe. It is not a pleasant experience, both times on a Sunday with a horse on board. The moral is always fit quality tyres and be very vigilant.

Had several go over the years, most when driving, but one when having a cup of tea in the caravan! Not sure you can go much by makers reputation, most of my failures were Michelin`s, which had not even been re cut! I didn't suffer any more damage, but the old D series had little plastic to destroy! By the way, all the Michelins went out through the tread, never a side wall, I caught one before it went, due to the wires that had broken working their way out of the tread, something for people to look for, perhaps.

I think that one of the problems is that lorry tyres are made for high mileage regular use on tarmac roads. Hobby users like us never wear tyres out. We travel on fields and tracks and often the lorry stands unused for months on end. Steel bracing provides high initial strength but if the casing is damaged in any way rust sets in and it won`t be long before you get the loud bang. A common problem on rears is a rock wedged between them. That can do two in at once. On fronts kerb damage is more likely.
I was in Jack Richards depot one day when they took delivery of a consignment of tyres. They were all Chinese.

dont write of the Chinese! Years ago, while in Singapore, I had a tyre throw its tread on my car. Local tyreman had none that would fit, so retreaded the old one, while I waited! total cost, 400 singapore $ about £5 !

Yeah I've had two rear failures both during the summer when exhibiting at vintage rallies, the first as you say had a rock trapped between the tyres and blew out travelling along the road on the o/s/r, couple of years later on the same side while parked up at the rally field (having been parked for over 40 hrs) suffered a blow out on the o/s/r again my poor friends in the next door caravan got a fright as they were sitting outside enjoying a cup of tea in the sunshine (tea went everywhere as you can imagine) the blow out split a huge chunk out of the brake hub.
