Losing cattle tags

How are people getting on with lost cattle tags? I seem to be losing a significant amount every year. (Have just ordered 20 tags from a batch of 90 youngstock that have just been housed, they were all double tagged in May)

Losing as many in the summer as in the winter.

They are genuine Allflex tags and probably 75% of the ones I find are still intact and the ear has been ripped, so not the tags fault.

The thing I can’t understand is it is almost always the button type tags that are missing, you’d think it would be the large ones that get caught. I’v moved from using button and large to using a medium and medium on the recommendation of a neighbour, but it’ll take a while to see if it’s made any difference.

Check you are putting them in correctly and get rid of all the places they are ripping then out. We rarely lose a tag we have put in ourselves. Maybe one in 3-400.

Didnt lose one eid button this year after putting them deeper into the ear, lost a fair few last year because they were not far enough in and caught on string/fencing etc

Allflex tags seem to be very poor, out of a batch of 72 bullocks 25 needed a tag
Previously used Shearwell and not great but not as bad as that, if they did high frequency eid will go back to them
Trailing a german button tag with eid in cows so time will tell on that

If I was asked to reform the whole system of tagging, I would have two metal tags with the full UK number.

In addition, I would specify at least one management tag, of any colour, to be filled in by the stockman, and which must at least
contain the the last four digits (handwritten) of the animal's official individual number.

why handwritten I struggle to read my own lists

We get the last 4 digits of the ear tag printed large across the management tag, also matches the FB

Use Roxan or Alflex large flag and medium flag. Loose very very few - around 2 or 3 per year- 100 calves + 100 weanlings

How & where you put them in as calves- there is a knack, and the feeding / barrier / housing etc etc has more to do with it than the brand of tag I think.
