Just shed a tear on your behalf. Lost my 2 labs over the last 2 years, both got to 17. Sobbed in front of the young lady vet with the last one which wasn't a good look for a burly farmer. Couldn't hold it back and had to be there to reassure her (dog, not vet). I know my dogs had the best life they could have had (I think) so in the end, it's a happy thing although you never really get over the loss of that relationship and you never forget that dog.

Got a new pup now and she's driving us nuts eating all the kid's wellies etc. It's the cycle of life.

I'm sure you did well by your friend and it's sad it has to end. Be proud and thankful of the life he/she had and the the time you spent together.

Sorry to hear this @Netherfield Know just how you are feeling.

We are so lucky to have them share our lives, it is only fitting to grieve at their loss.

  • The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

So sorry to hear this, they are always there when you need them and leave a big hole when they go. I lost a lovely lab 4 years ago and still think of him from time to time, cancer got the better of him. I buried him in a lovely spot in one of my favorite fields and on a lovely day I stop, have a break, sit down and have a cigar with him!!

Sorry to hear of your distress. I know the feeling well and have sobbed my guts out at the loss of a good dog (and even a few 'bad' ones). Sorrow fades in time but memories will aye remain. Take care.

So sorry to hear your sad news @Netherfield. We are so privileged to be able to share our lives with these creatures and in exchange we have to make these horrible decisions and weather the heartbreak when they are no longer with us. We have all been there and we have all shared tears. Would it help you to tell us a little bit about about your little dog?
