Low fpd

AHDB need to look into this using our levy money as its across the board.

Interestingly I was told that Scottish FPD is always higher than English or Welsh.

In fairness to AHDB they did all they could for me at a personal level. We had advice coming over from NZ and I know I wasnt the only affected by this.

But that's not to say that they can't do more going forward because this problem will rear its head every year until it's fixed.

That's good to hear.

I'd never had an issue before last year, but had been involved with producers that had been.

Doesn't seem to have any particular reason for it to happen.

Did you get samples straight from the cow tested? As in stripped into a sample jar.

Our biggest problem was that results would go up and down. 2 on the trot would be great, then one massive fall. So sampling the cows - would we have had a high day or a low day? Plus recording agencies weren't very proactive in offering an FPD test on individual samples.

I'm hoping someone can offer me some help, my fpd has been sailing close to the cut off for a while now but the last few collections it's been very low about 504 usually. This has only happened since3the cows have been grazing more grass (been turned into the silage fields) said fields are a fair walk away from the farm and I'm concerned that the fpd is being caused by the cows becoming thirsty on the way into the yard and then drinking loads of water before milking. I've seen before that sometimes restricting water before milking can help but I feel a bit cruel doing so? I've also just had a load of rock salt turn up which I've heard can help so that will be available from today.

Any other suggestions?? It's only costing 15 quid a collection at the minute but that soon adds up!
Are you Rodda’s?

I had this problem twenty years ago, for those where its possible to do so, the easiest and cheapest solution is to drop an appropriate amount out of the tank outlet, after the milk has stood unagitated, before collection. Any water will be at the lowest point in the tank. Best not to mention it to the dairy though :)

Last month I sampled a number of our cows and due to an NML problem (they lost the sample sheet) they tested all samples as payment tests, so included FPD results. Each sample was taken straight from the cow, hand milked into the sample pot. FPD results range from 527 down to 509. The bulk sample was 522.
