So you sell stock for crap money, of which you donate to the auctioneers, and all the various other levies then give the buyer some money back as well? :scratchhead:
Just how an outsider might see it, Tin hat on.
Myself, I see both sides, but never give and have never received it.turned it down once or twice,
Been asked for it once, politely told him he'd all ready robbed me:ROFLMAO:.

The worst pricks are the ones who seek you out looking for luck. Makes you want to not give them any.

Never expect it but more often that not you will get it.
Yes it gets up my nose too. Only happened to me twice and the last time turned out he hadn't bought anything! I always leave it in the office. I am glad I didn't have cash on me or I might have given him some

I've said it before that as a buyer of store cattle it's good when the seller comes and gives you luck personally. It is a good chance to ask a bit about the stock you have just bought in terms of vaccination and dosing history and also the feed regime they have been on.

As a seller I’m happy to give luck as it’s handy for having a chat and some feedback from buyers. When I buy I try to get some luck again for a chat and some info on what they’ve been fed etc. No harm in keeping traditions going, getting paper money luck does more for interested youngsters than any Young Handler class in a small show.

I've always given luck when selling breeding stock or store cattle and I appreciate it when I am also given it. It's common practice in mid Wales.
It's nothing to frown upon or question it.
I give £5 head on store cattle,£10 if one makes £1000 or more.I only give it on store/breeding lambs/hoggs if above £80 or so,or if i think i have had a good trade on the day. Selling dairy cattle at Carlisle last century,we were expected to give £5 in the 100,so could easily get to £50/head or more.No idea if this is still going.

Nothing like a sweeping generalisation. I remember buying an extra 100 mule glimmer lambs 11 months ago to help northern friends trade as they were so down. Hard to compare to exactly where you are from as you are one of the many that inconveniently don't put your area so makes a lot of theads irrelevant or hard to follow. Most mules sales luck on top pens to bottom is consistent. Check over yearecent and bid accordingly. Not a bribe just effectively a deal or transaction. All those that say a bribe or creating a false value or perception of farming in presume would never buy a tractor or pick up from one firm over another due to 0 % finance or differed payments. Principal exactly the same. It's nett cost what counts in whatever form and obvious perks of luck
But it doesn't say on your post where you are from either. ..... I was wondering though how far South was being referred to as I tend to think I have a fairly positive outlook on farming . I don't see the doom and gloom that is often talked about on TFF. I see it tough but I still manage to put a loaf of bread on the table and I still manage a visit to the pub. ...... the way cattle and sheep are selling in HFD market recently I think there are a lot more 'positive ' farmers than negative so perhaps we are just about in the North of the country !! ......I note the BBC are doing a 'focus on farming ' this week on the news . Could be interesting .

Its a nonsense and should have no place in modern business. When luck money ends up in the hands of a middle man it is surely a form of bribery and corruption.
I'm sure someone's going to throw away their reputation in buying well priced stock for the sake of a fiver.

Was at Darlington a couple of weeks back
One of my neighbours had sold a pen of stores, and left the luck money in the office for the buyer.
We both went up to the cafe for our lunch, when said buyer came over and said he wanted more luck money considering what he had paid for the beast.
Now I would have told him where to go.
But neighbour apologised and got his wallet out and gave him some more.

I always leave luck money in the office for the buyer to collect at end of day. but I won`t be told buy the buyer how much I should pay

When I get some luck from the sales office with the paperwork for the lots, I've bought , I never check which person the luck was from.
I never remember the sellers who have given me luck in the past. I do remember the one's who have bothered to speak to me afterwards. That means more.
