Luck money

I made a decision a couple of years ago not to give luck money when selling sheep, in stead I give the fist and best sheep to charity.
I was selling theaves in market last week (not a great trade but that's another story) when someone came up to me saying that he had bought a pen of sheep and wanted his luck. I explained my system to him but he said that i had to give him luck and got very irate with me insisting that i drove to a cash point to get him his money. ( the one thing i didn't wish him was any luck on the sheep for being so rude).
I didn't give him any money and told him where to go, has anyone else been in this situation before?

As ridiculous as luck money is it’s a tradition that’s continued through the times....if I buy something whether it be sheep or cattle I never ever ask for any luck but would expect some as I always give some out whenever I sell....I certainly wouldn’t embarrass both parties by going looking for it or becoming irate

I give it out and I once had someone seek me out when I sold an old tractor at a sale for some luck money thought it was odd but I gave him some nevertheless as the tractor was buggered

How do you even know who bought them?

I sold cattle this week- big ring, decent crowd. I could see one bloke bidding but not the other three. The buyers usually seem to do it by eyebrow movements so not exactly obvious around a large ring.

I leave it in the office on sheep at a big sale. Cash in small mart.

Dealer anyway probably doubled his money to go abroad.

Should an arable farmer receive luck money from the merchant from whom they buy their seed?

Bought a batch of 40 baby calves couple of weeks ago from Meadow Quality; they haven’t sent me any luck money yet

When l sell lambs l always give the buyer some luck, and if lm buying tups etc l alway think it's bad not to get luck in return, even a fiver. Maybe old fashioned but that's what l think. One dealer who buys thousands of lambs always kisses the licks penny.

Always thought it’s a ridiculous concept as your paying someone to buy your stock which doesn’t say much does it. I think you have an honourable system @Electricfencer. If the bloke had come to me like that I’d of told him that what he was doing was harassment and I’d be calling the police if he didn’t bugger off, of also inform the mart of the vendors behaviour. I dread to think of the amounts of luck money paid on big money animals like £100,000 tups.

I think it’s an outdated concept myself. Market is the market and no hocus pocus should be carrying on in the background. LAA should be seriously frowning on any of it going on imo.

Tbh I have given luck to a young farmers who I think needs a bit. But being told by a big sheep dealer I had to give it just wasn’t on. Luckily I’m not intimidated by people and told him to Bugger off.

Don’t think much luck will be passing hands at sheep breeding sales this tear given the poor trade. I never expect any luck when buyIng but it will generally be the older generation that gives some. We always give luck when selling store cattle. Comes to a lot of cash when selling big lots

Surely it tells you on your statement who bought them?

What did that cost you?

Fine looking animal so what does the buyer want luck money for? I can’t see why you should pay for his incompetence if a few go wrong.

So at what point in the future does the person who bought the stock and received the luck money think well that guys stock did me well and come give you the luck back ?

We don't see it down here and a good job, I wouldn't pay someone to buy a bullock for the reason they MAY pay a bit more and get your name in the market report.

Fine looking animal so what does the buyer want luck money for? I can’t see why you should pay for his incompetence if a few go wrong.

They cost me £84 in skipton last October. So made a loss this year. I’m keeping 300 back to lamb now.

I always give luck money when selling , i expect it when buying but dont ask, when buying stores i dont bid for the pens that i know don`t give luck as its disrespectful not to give a bit imo.
