Luck is just...um...errr......luck.
The bloke with the winning lottery ticket didn't get it by working hard pulling turnips everyday. He wasn't given it at birth. Perhaps he was in " the right place at the right time " ?
Hard work is no guaranty to wealth. If that were the case coal miners would be enjoying retirement in million pound mansions in Spain, whilst paper shufflers in London would be joining queues at food banks.........
Was the bloke buying land at £1500 acre in 1991 lucky ? Or was he just paying market value linked to it's earning potential ?
Is being in the " right place at the right time " due to luck ?
Or is it just being in the right place at the right time........
The bloke who bought land in 06 for £2k per acre on a floating interest rate is lucky lucky that the govt chose to protect him and f.uck the rest of us

@Walterp I find this thread very interesting. I do believe that some people seem to get 'all the luck'. However, I have a broader outlook on the whole scenario and prefer to label it 'chance'.

I watched a film one time called the adjustment bureau (some think this is a crap film, I think It is great) and I got me to thinking...2 minutes earlier or later on a particular day, and so much might have changed.

For instance, the people you sit beside on the first day of school (by chance) are most likely to become your best friends, and therefore influence your decisions...

In life, its not about what you know, its about who you know - and once chance meeting with one person may ultimately change the course of your life..

I happened to walk in and ask for a part time job at a livestock market when I was 14. From there I met the vast majority of the people I am very friendly with, met my girlfriend etc.

If I had not of chosen to walk in and ask for that job on that particular day, I may have changed my mind, or the job may have been taken - leading me to find a job somewhere else and subsequently create a new life path for me?

Its all down to chance....

I’ve often pondered this too.

The phenomenon of coincidence is equally interesting. I came to the conclusion many years ago, that there are such infinite opportunities for coincidence, that every now and again, one must occur.

People have choices every minute of the day many insignificant mundane ones but also very important ones that can shape not only their lives but many around them just like causing ripples in water . How each individual makes choices can have both catastrophic and positive effects on lives . With the number of people in the world you don’t need to know someone to feel the effects . All these decisions happening in sync will create the circumstances we find ourselves in and the question is how do we respond to circumstances round us . Do we care what our decisions do to others ?

The closest people in our lives will influence us the most . Are they lifting us up or dragging us down?

Walter, you're not the 1st person to pull the rug from under their employer and run off with their client list: you've just confused 'luck' with 'bare faced opportunism'.
This is an unjust and unworthy observation.

Professionals tend to acquire a 'following' - so that clients tend, in my experience, to retain a particular solicitor rather than a practice.

It is obvious, on reflection: people involved with the law, or any other area of expertise, want to retain the best available adviser. If that adviser moves, his/her 'following' moves with them.

It is equally obvious that a 'client list' is of no earthly use. Either someone retains you because they have confidence in your abilities, or they don't. You don't retain them - you just tack your plate to the wall and see who turns up.

It's that simple.

(The luck was in my erstwhile employer - who inherited his practice - not understanding this, either).

It might not be diplomatic, to the point of being blunt - but its true enough and luck had nothing whatever to do with it.

Luck would have had your employer cease trading for some reason not connected with his lack of foresight and your perspicacity.

I don’t know why, but reading your post brings to mind a lovely wee Burns poem that runs through my head when I’m in the company of certain provincial solicitors. It always seems so, err, fitting:

O wad some Pow'r the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!
It wad frae mony a blunder free us,
An' foolish notion:
What airs in dress an' gait wad lea'e us,
An' ev'n devotion!
