Luck

I was always brought up being taught that only real farmers give luck.
If I'm buying cattle/machinery.. I expect luck in return, my father has never sold an animal at the mart without crossing the buyers hand with silver.

But it really is a thing that is dying out, I wonder will there be a time where giving luck is in the history books?

I know recently I asked a salesman for a coat for the driver of a new machine purchased as some luck.. you would swear I asked the salesman to cut one of their arms off.

I don’t know why salesmen wouldn’t give a coat or a set overalls with a new machine sounds silly but the 50 quid worth of gift can actually be the difference between people going back there for the next tens of thousands purchase farmers in particular do like to feel like they been looked after a bit and there business is valued

Long term VS short term thinking. The sales person is thinking of this quarters sales target not the return sales in several years when he might have moved on to another employer.

The overalls will have long fallen apart by the time I look to buy again.... the salesman will have moved on... brands and dealerships reputations will have evolved or devolved... much as I like a new set of overalls thrown it certainly wont seal the deal for me!

When you even get charged for washing the mechanics hands in this day and age, it's nice to get something back at the start.. the coat's value will hopefully pay for all the hand washing for the life of the machine.

CNH are good to us and I always look forward to getting my Lemken ruler.

I would never have the nerve to ask anyone at the mart for luck but I'm not afraid to ask the machinery reps

I've no objection to 'luck' but flatly refused the son of a neighbour who was already blazing drunk and was loudly haranguing me for money after a sale. It didn't seem to be the responsible thing to do to return him to his mother in even worse condition. I hope my stock sell because they are worth buying, not because of some other financial inducement.

Interestingly, I've recently had a couple of inquirers interested in making a purchase. As both owe me money (not huge sums, but significant) I won't be selling to them either!:)

Same as making a fuss of farmers young son
Give him a hat or overalls as one he’ll be the decision maker

Alot more buyers around the sale rings these days buying on multiple accounts, if they know they are in for £20 they might bid an extra £20/hd on a bunch of cattle so giving luck is a sound investment imo. I never ask for luck though, its a gesture not a bribe.
