Luck

Do they still spit on the luck money, or has COVID stopped that.
Dealers must have so much cash in their pockets every week that it must cover their living expenses.

days musty be numbered,

dealer tells me you dont buy em for luck you buy them cos you want em,

i give a little on stores if they do well, if they dont i dont give any.

delers as above must literally run off luck,

plus never give it in hand always just nocked off in office so they collect when they go in.

I’ve been asked a few times in a fat market by buyers always decline I tell them to bid what they think they are worth. But I think it’s a nice gesture for breeding stock but should be only a pound a head in my opinion.

From a while back :
When I started farming I sold a pen of ewe lambs, I went to give some luck to the buyer, however I couldn't get the coins out of my pocket at once, " hang on I've got a bit more" says I, "I should think so!" Says she. That killed any chance of me giving luck as long as I'm alive. I was bloody hard up and struggling to stay afloat at the time, and what was probably an off the cuff comment, really cut deep at the time.
I don't mind if folk want to buy my stock or not, i'm not bribeing them.

Mate Keepers a 2500 acre estate for a syndicate of tech millionaires his tips over the season are more than his wage which is good as it’s classed as part time work yet it’s probably full time all the hours he does

I’d feel the same and never give luck as a bribe or with any expectation

Had someone say it should have been more. Then don't bid if you are relying on the luck to make a profit. Certainly not in a private deal - haggle then agree the price, not the other way round. Some in the fat ring are making huge amounts a week and HMRC must get wise at some point.

Never have paid luck money and never will. I don't go in a shop and buy something, pay for it, and then expect some money back. The price is the price at the fall of the hammer, if it is too high for you don't bid.
Anyway, anybody who buys any of my stores, be that cattle or lambs get all the luck they need when they buy them.

You had to work the system though, one chap used to come buying a few pullets always wanted a 'bit of luck' soon learned to add a bit on to knock it off later.

Why didn't he just offer less? Can't understand why you'd agree a price then expect money in return. Is it mental illness?

luck money is so you could get your name in the paper for topping the market.
we usually have good lambs in yet some shite in the next pen will top the market while they hand over the “luck money” which evens out for over paying for them.

Sold a Lim bull in Carlisle once. Bloke wanted to buy him privately the night before for 5000 then run him to 10000 in the ring and have 5000 luck
Sounds like some sort of tax fiddle. Mates buying bulls/tups for massive money to get the breeders name in the papers so he can charge more from home etc isnt in keeping with the spirit of the job imo but it happens

Auctioneer came round asking what reserves people were setting. Told him about it and he laughed and said " he's a bit of a lad isn't he? ". Wasn't surprised in the slightest so I think it goes on a lot with full knowledge

One dealer used to kiss the luck I gave him. Not seen anyone spit on it.
Buyers surely will bid a bid more if they know you give luck. No skin off their nose....it's who they're buying for that pays....and they pocket the cash.

HMRC must get wise at some point.
HMRC are well aware of it, have looked into it quite some time ago and from what I remember took things no further, not sure on their thoughts/reasoning.

I give luck on stock I sell or more to point get auctioneers to put it on the book, they take it out of my sale proceeds, that way it can be claimed as a buisness expense, unlike cash out of my pocket which comes out of taxed income.

I do give luck and almost always give it to dealers and young lads buying, and I think it is import to keep the tradition alive, but I hate being asked for it and won't give it when asked.
I also do expect luck when I'm buying for people, I like for the vender to come and give it to me and I'm not to bothered how much it is but its about building a relationship with them.
