M F 4709

looking for a general purpose estate tractor, whats the Massey 4709 like? max budget £30,000

If I am barking up the wrong tree, please let me know what you think would be a suitable tractor?

The tractor won’t do much hard work or big hours, would need to lift a tonne and very occasionally tow 8t max

Thanks for your thoughts.

Armatrac?

Little case farmall, uncle has a new 105c 2wd on his feeder wagon that would weigh more than 8t loaded I'd have thought. Doesn't seem to bother it.
Both basic little tractors

Would need to be 4x4 for bracken topping up in the hills, know nothing about Armatrac! Will have a google. Cheers

MF are and have been making tractors since forever and aren't going anywhere. Same with JD, CNH and even Kubota. Armatrac though? Good luck with that long term. So yes, a 4709 is the new 390 Turbo, and we all know what a good 'investment' they were/are. They are popular for a reason. The next best bet would be a Kubota, and a New Holland or Case. Depends on your local dealers more then the tractors, between that lot in my opinion. Same goes for a basic 90hp John Deere. You are assured of a good used market for all of them, although the Kubota may be the weakest there unless changing for another Kubota.
Buy what you fancy. 90hp basic tractors of a good brand will always shift for good money if looked after. They are all up to the job as long as you don't buy a light utility one [which I'm assuming you need] and expect it to do heavy duty work constantly. There are heavier built, power shift 90hp tractors that are far more expensive than a 4709 and its similar competitors.

@Cowabunga have you driven one or got any friends with one?

Are they much smaller than a 5455

I really need to go and see one, but just trying to find out if it’s the model I should be spending my time looking for.

If you had the chance of a 2016 4709 with 600 hours on the clock or a 2012 5455 4500 hours on the clock for similar money, what would you choose?

Case usually come in 4wd, just specked as 2 to deal with tight passageways. Which dealers are closest to you, or what do you already run?

I am used to Massey’s and also they will be the closest dealers, so in all honesty it probably will be a Massey, just trying to figure out if I should look at the 47 range and get a better newer tractor or get say a 5610 which will be older and a lot higher hours.

I’ve driven one but only briefly. The gearchange is superb and the three cylinder engine peppy. If you are not doing heavy intensive work that requires a power shift, like pulling a trailer besides a self propelled, then I would go for the new 4709. Try them out, sit in the cab, listen, operate the gearshift on both. I can guarantee that the 4709 will use substantially less fuel. On the other hand it has the added complexity of Adblue which is a bit of an unknown cost [of repair] as it gets old. I drive a 5445 tier3 Dyna4 regularly and it is the smallest tractor I own and a bit of a favourite with us all.

Sorry meant 5610?

Nope. I don't need or want a new tractor and probably can't justify one with the current workload, which is much reduced compared to twenty years ago when I did silage for some seven farms apart from my own, using a Mengele. Those days have gone and all those dairy farms have retired and gone out of milk production since.

Cowabunga would agree Massey always been able to make a simple range of reliable tractors like 5400s?
