Macdon v Convio

We looked at a macdon when we last changed our machine. Claas were very reluctant to sell a combine without the header and now they’ve got their own I guess it would be more so.

Might be wrong but heard the Class convio are made under license by Macdon, similar arrangement that CNH have agreed with Macdon
Claas convo is designed and made by Claas. The one you are thinking of is the swath up which is a macdon unit.
the convio talks to the combine which is a massive advantage, belt speeds and reel speeds increase and decrease with forward speed.
reversable belts from the cab.
feed augers selectable from the cab.
full auto contour.
ability to go from rigid to full flex along the knife at the touch of a button, using the auto contour button

You would never guess who @Matt L works for!

I've heard the convio is very expensive to run.

Can I add the Geringhof flex draper into the mix. Any Fendt Ideal users out there?

We had a demo of a Macdon in flat Peas last year. Very very impressive. I would guess that in standing wheat the advantage would be small on a sunny day in August, but greater on damp evenings in Sept.

No more expensive to run than any other header that has a flexible knife.
they will all have more durable knife sections due to the bending of the knife.
also, they will all put more pressure on the skid units as that is how they allow for full ground contour following.
same with anything, it is all about how you set them up on the machine and to the field conditions.

macdon flexes in three sections much like a sprayer boom vs the convo where the knife can flex anywhere along its length.
ie the convo knife can flex over contours Along the working width rather than just pivoting wings.

At the wider widths the macdon is the only head that I would run. The frame flex is going to allow much better contour following than a knife flex machine. I currently have a non flex 36 ft honey bee and wish every harvest it was a macdon.

macdon not doing themselves any favours with lack of supply at the moment though

We run a convio but not a flex but extremely impressed with it. Does the flex run on metal skids when flexing? I’m only asking because metal and flints don’t mix in this weather.
