Machinery dealers/manufactures, have they lost touch with farming reality?

Had a call from a machinery manufacturers rep suggesting that it might be a really good time to change my machine (telehandler).
I explained that it was not on my “to do” list but that if the deal was right I might be persuaded.
so the dealer rep turns up and we go through the process. I’m expecting a deal that is too good to refuse .......... well that was a mistake 🤦
My machine has just turned 4 years old and has only done just over 1700 hours. Cost to change quoted at £35.5k 😮😮😮
What the manufacturer doesn’t realise is the damage this has done to my thoughts about the dealer and manufacturer.
So that’s a cost to change of almost £21/hr.
Do other forum members think that is reasonable or unaffordable? It is certainly far more than I expected.
Current machine will be staying with me for a good few years yet now 😉
what's the cash price...cos that looks like they're reckoning yours is half cooked at 1700 hours!
I think i'd sooner buy yours at what they're valuing it....

We looked at adding a second telehandler to our lineup but the depreciation on a new one is ridiculous. When we do we will be hiring one which works out at below £10 an hour for a top spec new machine each year.

We try and buy ex demo or 1yr old and sell private. Bought 320 on 750hrs for 55k instead of nearly 70k kept 4yrs and sold for 35k on 6000hrs. Dealer offered us 29k instead of the 35k we got private and we bought another 1yr old straight deal 65k instead of 85k. Its a lot more hassle than just ordering a new one but how many hours work do you need to do to earn 20k.

At 400 ish hours a years and assuming workload doesn't change, it will probably last 15-20 years without costing too much if you look after it. So I don't think you need worry about it for a while (y)
Maybe mention that to the rep, see what they say.

We do roughly the same 3000 hrs and change ours is a 635 but we’re nearer £12/ hour with last machine! How do you work it out I just do cost to change divided by 3000 hrs so it’s always in Warranty so we have to service and fuel it
Just divide hours worked by cost to change. I wouldn't be much below £10 hr like some on this thread. Dealer knows that's figure we work towards and quotes accordingly I think.

Looks good but they’re not 85k, I paid 69 for mine in April

Yep I agree. Merlo just quoted £45/hour to change 😱. That’s a result of us wanting to trade an old version against the new massively price hiked version. So we will keep our old one and buy another used one to run two to split the work load and drop their hours to 500 per year each. It extends the service schedule, reduces tyre wear etc. Then I think in due course we’ll add a 3rd used one so we’ve 3 doing 300 ish hours per year each.

Well they are with my local dealer but I know they are not the cheapest...... and they are not adding a bit on to make the trade in look better as the trade in was under valued as well. Brand new full spec 320s for 69k?

Ive just checked the paper work- yes the machine was £69k full spec, and we added 5 year 5000 hour warranty for another £2500, so it was £71500 all in.

This issue is across all machinery; I never understood why people would change a tractor or loader or truck that had low hours only to pay over the odds to keep new. I see some see the light.

For example I know one contractor that used to change his Jcb loader every few years. But that gap widened from 20k to 80k to change. We both agreed his trade machine was worth more to him than the trade in value. So as 80k was the deal to move up; we both agreed if he found a similar machine to his trade in for similar or less money; that was the way to go. So now he runs two identical Jcbs for less money than the cost to change for a new one.

His depreciation has lowered; and he has 2 machines, not just 1 and peace of mind if one goes bang.

That said, if you like the simplicity of fueling and driving; keeping within warranty is the only option.

At the end of the day, sure we are all millionaires and it’s only money

Dealers and manufacturers must be worried about life after BPS. Regulation, especially for emissions, is making production costs higher but machinery inflation is just ridiculous at the moment.

I have a 400hp hire tractor for 12 weeks/year. The current 2017 one is 3 years old and is due to be changed. The same spec replacement is 25% more to buy and hire than the current one!

Where do we go? A bigger fleet of older machines kept for much longer? Why do we all feel the need to buy new gear and trade it on for new after a few years?? The Americans & Aussies don't do this - they keep them for far longer.

Its not just the ag sector. I had a quote yesterday from a plant hire company we've used for years but its recently changed hands for a 18 metre cherry picker. I need it for 1 day to run some cabling. First price was £320 for 1 day, £360 2 days and £400 for 3-5 days plus £136 delivery and collection.

Told them it was to expensive so they requoted £232 for 1 day, £261 for 2 days, £290 for 3-5 days. Transport remained the same.

They then requoted again at £208 for 1 day, £234 for 2 days and £260 for 3-5 days. Transport dropped to £120 delivery and collection.

So I booked elsewhere for £200 for 1 day and £100 delivery and collection. So many people are trying to take the p**s at the minute. Its either sheer desperation or serious arrogance.

Sometimes I don’t understand farmers, work really hard all hours to produce good crops don’t spend a lot on themselves and then when they make a bit of money they change a machine not because they need to but because they want to ‘keep up to date‘ or save tax or it will cost too much if we leave it too long. All totally rubbish reasons in a business setting in my opinion. Hey ho not my money though, I’m sure machines will be kept longer going forward though, so yes I think machinery suppliers may be concerned.

I’ve tried all ways , the 3 year Chuck n change has worked out the most expensive way by far by a county mile absolute extortion in comparison to buying at three and keeping ten years !

I don’t think there’s any right or wrong; but there is a time or deal when it makes sense.

It’s not only the purchase price, but running costs. Seemingly 30k repair bills are not uncommon now for 180hp tractors.
