Unless you are having it on finance, cash or cheque on delivery is the norm on wholegoods.
it depends on two things one the dealer and two the customer if the dealer doesnt know you or has to get it in special then it might even be cash in advance some i deal with i can phone up and they send it down and the bill follows

Pay before you take away unless agreed otherwise. I have bought machines on the basis that I would pay half there and then as a deposit then pay the remaining half the next month to ease cash flow, I would only take the machine when it’s paid for

If the dealer knows the customer there’s obviously some flexibility...!

If you can`t pay it all on delivery ( I always pay as soon as bill arrives ,or on delivery, whatever the dealer wants) perhaps you should be looking for a good deal on finance - very often it doesn`t make much difference to the price you pay so it`s worth considering.

If it’s a couple of grand and you’ve got a good history with the dealer then splitting the invoice over two months is a reasonable ask. Just make sure you do pay or else everyone will understandably get upset.

Question would you let anyone take a machine from your yard without paying or travel miles with a machine to see if a person likes \ wants to buy it without some commitment ?

Answer NO

the point is its about reputation, and attitude when i moved down here thirty years ago i was new kid on the block. i went around the dealers looking for machinery and i must say i was taken aback by their attitude,i went into the ford dealer and wanted to purchase a new 7810 they gave me a price i explained i wasnt moving in till september i wanted to start the payments but i didnt want it delivering till i moved in at that point i wanted the warranty to start i was prepared to give them a cheque up front for the first payment they said com back in september when i went back in sept the interest free had finished and the price had gone up three grand i went to the case dealer and asked for a price on a 956 he said do you have an account i went into the office and the woman said i cant open an account without a bankers reference, on the way out the rep was supervising the unloading of a case maxum i said that looks like a good piece of kit how much is one of those twenty four grand, you need to make up your mind what you want, i thought ive only been here half an hour and been sneeped twice , a few days later i went to the sister depo in the north of the county to look at a second hand machine while walking up the yard i said those maxums look a fair bit of kit he said i will sell you one i said they are too expensive he said twenty two with three years interest free isaid still a bit rich he replied have you got another tractor yes i can do a conquest deal whats that to you two grand off i said i dont have an account he replied you will have if you buy that tractor since then i have bought five new tractors from them

Don’t think I’ve ever been asked to pay up front or even on delivery, always just get invoiced following delivery but we pay pretty quick. If it’s a company we have never dealt with before, we will bacs the money immediately but surely if you have dealt with a dealer for decades does it not show a lack of trust if they will not supply a machine until it is paid for?

i once tried to order some parts for my K V plough it was only a few bolts because i didnt have an account with the they would not order the parts till they were paid for as it was a bank holiday looming i was a bit p-st off if i post the cheque thursday they receive it friday order the parts thats if they dont wait for it to clear it might be tuesday before they get the bits
so i phoned a firm i used to deal with where i came from ten years earlier they had them in stock and put them in the poste here next day
there has to be trust without it we are all knackered, perhaps we should name all the good people we deal with i am sure they deserve recognition
